HYPOTHETICAL (nobody panic): Let's say you have the most AWFUL buddy on the planet: hard to keep track of, doesn't keep track of you, is all over the place, usually dives solo and/or with a camera, and thinks buddy diving is stupid. Unfortunately you can't ditch this bozo because they are your SO. Are you diving solo when you dive with this person?

You would have to know where they were and be able to get to them to cut thier hose

Effectively, yes, you're diving solo.

You may not be able to ditch him, but I wouldn't dive with him.

Yes. Panic.

Then take all the necessary steps to self sufficient solo diving, you're doing it anyways.

This situation can be avoided by communicating with your new buddy before the dive. People usually communicate verbally much like they will dive with you. Lack of communication on the boat means the same below most of the time. Strange behavior on the boat usually means the same will happen in the water or worse. SO, the answer is yes. You are diving alone and if you didn't communicate and get a good feel for your dive buddy before the dive then you actually chose to dive alone with this ticking time bomb. Again, this isn't always the case, but it is most of the time. You have to initiate basic dive planning most of the time with a new buddy. If they don't respond well to dive planning then find a new buddy or realize that you are now taking the same chances (or worse) that a solo diver takes. Good luck! Most of us have been in this position once or twice. I refuse to ever do it again.

Worse than diving solo, you and they would be diving a plan that is based on fantasy. How many contingency plans depend on your buddy to be there? OOA, entanglement, uncontrolled freeflow..... Diving solo means having a plan for dealing with these situation.

There are times I dive Solo and in an area where there are "GOOD" divers close by.
I imagine I am safer diving Solo than you diving with this "So-Called" buddy.

Yes you are diving alone and probably worse off than solo diving becuase you think your diving with a buddy. But your really not!

I agree with herb. You should be diving solo or buddy. The in between thing does not work very well.

So who is your SO Gidds? :eyebrow:
