Does not the idea and practice of diving solo fly in the face on the first law of diving to never dive alone and always have a buddy?

No, the laws are:

1. breathe in - breathe out - don't hold your breath
2. have fun
3. read the sticky at the top of the forum

solo diving doubles the chance of you getting eaten by a shark ... let me explain ... two divers, one hunger fish .. 50/50 odds he go after your buddy and not you .... have you seen open water yet ?

unless you refer to any local restrictions, obviously scuba diving has no laws. There are obvious differences in the way you approach a buddy dive to a solo dive, but I seem to manage quite well doing both and (touch wood) have never had any probs doing either.

So long as you plan a solo dive (as you would do any other dive) properly, taking into account the additional considerations, have the correct mindset and the necessary redundancy and overall diving experience then I do not believe solo diving to be inherently dangerous.

As other divers who feel the same have mentioned in different threads the only other argument that remains is that tired one about... 'but isn't diving meant to be social?'

Some folks choose to dive with a buddy; some have to dive with a buddy; and some choose to dive solo.

Do you have a choice?

Yes I have.

It is ingrained in me to always go with a buddy.

That's fine, you can dive how you want to, but some of us like to go it alone sometimes.
