I'm thinking of picking up my first BC this week. It's my first purchase beyond my wet suit, so I'm hoping for a little input. I tried out the Sherwood Solaris. The fit is comfortable and I prefer the back inflate over the jacket style. Is the Solaris a good product? Would you recommend it?

That would be helpful wouldn't it! I mainly do freshwater dives in the Mid West. About twice a year I dive in the gulf. Temperature ranges from 58-80 degrees.

It looks like a pretty solid piece of equipment to me. I have never personally used this model of BCD but I have used Sherwood equipment before and other than one strange incident, it has never failed me.

To be honest, IMO any back inflate BC is a good thing. I've never dove this BC but I have seen them up close and they look ok to me.

The key consideration is for them to fit well and if this one does it's a step in the right direction. Sherwood makes pretty good gear and I don't think I've heard any bad things about it.

That said I've never dove with anybody who's got one.

Thanks all! I've never bought anything beyond the wet suit, but I know what features I want and this seems to have them all. Looks like I'm getting my first BC!

I selected this one. Actually, it should be arriving sometime next week :-) I have a pair of large 'flotation devices' and I thought I would go with a back inflation BC to even things out and to free up things a bit. It will be my 1st BC purchase, so I am kind of nervous. I guess we all have to start somewhere! If I don't like it, there is always Ebay to sell it on!

I have a friend (an MSDT) that dives the Solaris and loves it, albeit she rarely uses the integrated weight system opting for a weight belt. I recommend getting the optional Akona Pro-Kit that has cool retractors (hidden on the BC,) a light, and knife.

Yep, I got the pro-kit as well. I probably won't use the weight integration system either. It seems that it would be easier to slap on a weight belt than to fuss with putting weights in my bc. I have ordered every peice of gear I need except for weights and a tank, those can easily be rented.

I own this bcd. I use it in the pool and diving warm water. It is very comfortable and I like the "open feel" of it.

The weight system is very easy. If you dive with less than 20 pounds, you can intergrate nicely. The trim pockets are nice to use too.

Getting the pro-kit is a good idea. It is very handy, especially the light
