Soft Weights

I have a question reguarding shoft weights. I think they are also refered to as shot weights. The bags that they come in are sold of ebay for a fair price. The ones shipped from the dive store are expensive to ship because they are already filled and heavy. I was wondering what you put in those because I could get the bags and fill them once I got them home. Is it something like BB's?

Pretty much any gun shop. Look for reloading supplies. Use a #6 shot or maybe #4. Too small like #9 more easily leaks from seams in the bags, too large is just lumply.


Years ago, when I needed 200lb or so of shot to fill metal forming shot bags, I went to the local trap and skeet range on a day they were closed with a broom and a few five gallon buckets. In about 20 minutes I had more shot than I could carry.

If you choose to do this check with the club as some "harvest' the shot themselves or sell it to recyclers.

The grounds keeper in my case had a taste for beer......

my local dive shop sells soft weight for 2.50 a pound.. is that expensive? I was also told that if i get the bags and try to sew them that it will need to be done with an industrial strength sewing machine. Can I just use hard weights? Will this stress the pockets in the bc over time?

Don't necessarily need an industrial sewing machine - but you do need the right choice of needle and thread.

2.50 a pound for soft weight is normal. Soft weights tend to be more expensive than hard weights (probably around 1.50 to 2.00 a pound).

Go to an RV dealer and buy an awning / canvas repair kit. Has the needle and heavy duty thread that you need. I make all my own soft weight pouches out of nylon storm window screen and sew them up by hand. Little time consuming, but "if I aint divin, then I aught to be doin somethin for divin".
