The newspapers said yesterday that the arm of a diver was found on the beach at Sodwana Bay. The bite markings are thought to those from a tiger shark. Does antone know anything about the incident?

Just came back from Mocambique. The latest story we heard is that the "diver" was actually spearfishing with friends from a boat. The group lost him and a search party was sent out. Conjecture seems to be that he had shallow water blackout and drowned as a result. The bite mark/s are believed to be post-mortem. This is not inconceivable as the marks apparently match those of a tiger shark (scavenger).

Another example of press sensationalism, it would seem.

What's going to sell more papers:

"Spearfisherman Drowns"

-or-

"Grim Remains Of Diver Found"

-or-

"Diver Devoured By Shark"?

Condolences to Sheldon's family, friends and the staff from Coral Divers.

Cheers,

Andrew

Grim remains of diver found

Sodwana Bay - A left hand and a piece of a wetsuit was all that was to be found of a 22-year-old diver who went missing at Sodwana Bay, one of the world's premier diving spots on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, police said on Friday.

Seldon Jee, of KwaMbonambi, went missing on Thursday morning, Captain Tienkie van Vuuren said.

Police arrived at Sodwana Bay at 11:00 on Thursday, but only found Jee's hand and a piece of his wetsuit.

"It's not confirmed that it was a shark, but it might have been," she said.

Jee, who worked for Coral Reef Divers, and three others went diving about 08:00 on Thursday. Sometime thereafter Jee became parted from his fellows, and was attacked.
