I am leaving for the Socorro Islands tomorrow.
Does any body know what kind of wet suit to wear?
7/5 OR 3mm?

According to the Nautilus Explorers 'Captains Log', on 3/14 they had a temp of 74 F at Socorro. I'd do a 5mm. My jealousy makes me hate you.:D I'm booked for a Socorro trip on the Explorer in Jan. 2010. Seems like forever. Tell a manta I said 'Hi' and have fun.

I know you are off on your trip, Hope all is well and your gear arrived close to the same time you did. Don't forget the five report when you get back!
Best Regards and Safe Diving,
Ray

i too am jealous, and we're planning to go in 2010 as well! have a great time!!! phillyrob........do you know which month over there it is when the water temps are about 80? and would the mantas still be there in the warmer water?? i have to figure out when in 2010 we will go. i didn't know you could book that far ahead. did you have to pay for the whole thing to book it this far in advance, or just a deposit?

What kind of wetsuit will I need?

The ocean temps at Socorro usually range from 78F-82F in November, 70F-74F in Feb/March and then 76F–80F in April and May. Depending on what time of year you join us for the Socorro trips, we’d recommend a 3mm or 5mm in the warmer months, and a 5/7mm or a 7mm in the cooler months. A lot of our guests also pack a vest and hood or a vest with an attached hood in case we run into thermoclines during the cooler months. We are not permitted by law to dive with gloves at Socorro. The Sea of Cortez water temps are generally warmer with an average of around 72F-75F in June, 75F-80F in July and early August, warming to 80F-85F in late August/Sept and October. We frequently dive the warmer months in the Sea of Cortez with 3mm shorties. It is always better to layer your wetsuits so that you can use part or all to adjust for water temps. For the Guadalupe trips, the water temp averages 65F-70F so be sure to pack your gloves, hood and booties plus either a drysuit or a very good 7mm. Guests rotate in and out of the shark cages every hour

That's from FAQ on the Solymar V website. The mantas' are always there. The Explorers' schedule on their site goes to 2011. You have to put down a deposit of 1/4 of the trip price. I'm staying in the two people 'dorm', so for me it was $620. Then I send them $300 every other month for a total of $2450. It's got to be paid in full about three month before you go. I did their Sea of Cortez trip in October. It was great !! Great boat and really nice, smart crew.
