I'd like to keep everything the same brand. I don't want cheap gear but I don't need the most expensive. I've been looking at Dacor, Mares, and Cressi gear. I'm not about to walk into a retail store and ask what to buy regardless of their experience levels because I don't want an opinion biased by what they sell. If anyone out there would like to help me out I'd appreciate it. I would be diving off the southern coast of CA, current water temp is 69 degrees f. I'm looking for some general pros and cons of equipment by manufacturer. Thanks so much!

Sherwood makes some pretty good stuff. Its all preference too, I like sherwood alot. Then again the mares stuff is pretty compact and have some pretty cool BC'S . You'll get the same difference in opinions here that would would get from your dive shop. Most of the stuff out there is reputable, especially if your dive shop is selling it.

You might want to post in the equipment section of the forums.

I think you should check out some reviews, and compair shop. If ya ask me that the best way, most people will always tell you what they think is better based on what they have. For instance, i dig Zeagle BCs, thats what i dive with everything else just aint as good. My opinion. I Like to check Roldales.
ALSO think to the future, do you plane on getting into Tech, and how seriuos are you with diving. I make that a factor when i buy anything. Why get somthing that will not do the job 6 months down the road... MY 2 cents

trying to keep everything the same brand is going to be hard. For example, you are going to find that a company that makes economical, reliable regulators does not make a decent BCD, and so on with other components. Unless you count Aqualung USA companies as one company, since Aqualung about owns about 1/3 of the major scuba manufacturers. My two cents if you want to stick with one brand is to buy Apeks regulators, Seaquest BCD, Suunto computer (duh), Aqualung fins and snorkel, Seaquest wetsuit. All those components are made by companies owned by Aqualung

Whatch out for reviews as they CAN be very bias. Some are some aren't just be careful.

Your best bet is to use as wide a variety of equipment as possible and make up your own mind. What is best for me might not be the best for you. No one piece of gear will be the best in every situation, period.

Why do you want to buy equipment all of one brand? I can't think of a single good reason to do that, I can think of many reasons why not. One is mentioned above, different companies tend to be good at different equipment. Another is that the best BC, reg, fins, and everything else _for you_ are bound not to be the same brand.

i agree with the above post. all my eq is mares (computer mask fins snorkle wetsuity it in a few ect.). but i can not find a mared bcd that i like and that will fit me rite. but i did find a zeagle bcd that i like and i am going to buy it in a few weeks, after i get my wife her kit.

thanks
brian

DACOR sucks. they cant be used with anything else. mares has a history of overly bouyant bcds. sherwood, genesis, scuba pro...use stuff that is good gear. not gear that just looks good.

Remembering that free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it...well...anyway.

IMHO, take it slow. Buy your gear a bit at a time after researching it. And, above all, try before you buy.

All the best, James

BTW, I agree with Gary D.'s post above 100% !

This is not a contest with Style points. You can generally get gear to match by color, and you have a wide selection of gear in say blue or green, or any other color pretty much. Personally I go with Black because it hides stains, and yellow because it shows up well. Other than that I'm supprised both of my fins are made by the same company... Ok, it's not that bad, but I think you get the point.
