hello, i got on this to ask some questions about Photography and housings for G9. i'm going back to Cozumel for the winter next week and want t kinda figure this out or at least have an idea before i leave, what to bring down w/ me. i've been reading about the iklite and the OEM housings but don't have much experience w/ either. i do like the iklite b/c of the easy filters and wide lens but does anyone have somehting to share w/ a wannabe photographer? thank you for your time and i look forward to hearing from ya'll soon. (no i'm not from TX. i'm a CO/WY cowboy)

Ikelite is expensive, Canon OEM housing is cheap. Downside with the Canon OEM is you can only use optically fired strobes.
As far as cozumel goes, you wont really need strobes to get decent pictures. All you need is RAW and a program that can edit RAW files, such as Adobe lightroom or photoshop. Easiest is to just shoot in auto with auto wb and no flash. A quick WB adjustment in lightroom or photoshop and youll be well on your way..

I agree with Tigerman about the Ikelite Housing. I have an Olympus in an Ikelite housing and one in a Olympus housing. The Ikelite is more difficult to operate because the buttons are so close together, the Olympus housing operates like the housing isn't even there. Amazon has the Canon housing for the G9 (WP-DC21) for $143. I agree about the strobe, you could probably wait as the G9 shoots RAW but do look at the Inon 2000s deal at Backscatter $750 for strobe, tray, arms.

gregaro, Look at the top of each page there will a "Forums" button. When clicked it will open a large list of topics about diving, equipment, training, Where to go, almost everything that can be done underwater. You've already seen disagreement about camera brands. . . and we all have to promise to play nice here.

Scroll down the list under "Forums" till you find "Photography". . . Under that topic you will find nice places to play for the "Nikon" or "Canon" or "Olympus" kids. There are some nice children there that will answer your questions about any equipment. . . and there are those that don't play nice. Each person is giving you their opinions on the equipment they bought, and very few people can afford to buy one of everything to give a comprehensive answer. You can get started for a few hundred dollars, or pay $20,000 easily.

While in Cozumel, talk with some of the dive shops to try their diving services, and ask for their advise about renting camera equipment. There was a fantastic photo shop that gave lessons, and rented camera gear. . . but it closed and the people moved to Colorado. There probably will be equipment to rent from other shops.

Read the board even after you get down there. Visit with the local dive shops. And try different kinds of equipment, in the water, before you buy. Also, At the top of each page is a button for "Photo Gallery" find the kind of pictures you would like to take and look at the equipment used to make those pictures.

welcome aboard
