norkelling/Spear fishing. what do i need
Ive snorkeled once before. Im a slow swimmer. pretty poor. I couldnt even float so i got a life jacket.

I need to consider a few things

1. Size of flipper- I heard small is better for a beginner. Also how far over the back of the flipper should the heal protrude? I hope this second part makes sense.

2. Size of mask- Not sure whether big small, fog proof, etc. Also can you get tinted to block your eyes.

3. gloves Do i need water proof gloves or some garden gloves so i dont cut my hand.

4. hand flippers like the swimmers use. i suppose this is a no, as it might wake the fish and i need a hand free to hold my hand spear.

5. what are the best sort of places to buy these? I can get a mask from Crazy clarks for $8. but I could get mask, snorkel and flippers for like $22 from kmart so i suppose it would be better from kmart.

6. I suppose it might be optimistic thinking i will spear fish, but perhaps if im lucky Ill find some crustaceans to spear.

Many thanks. Im a bit paniced because I am leaving in a week

ialready have a 2m/ 7 foot spear in 3 parts so i can store and adjust i suppose.

Bit of advice.
Practice swimming skills before cluttering yourself up with spearfishing skills.
You must be a confident diver/swimmer to be a sucessful spearfisherman.

Im not looking to become a perfect spear fishermen. I just know of this spot where it might be easy for an amatuer to catch some crustacean. I wouldnt bother trying to do it if it was going to be a 5m dive underneath a reef or something.

K Mart isn't the best place to find dive gear. You might try the Yellow Pages for a dive shop in your area. It'll cost a little more but the chances of it doing what it's supposed to do will be greater. Plus you might meet some people there who can answer some of your questions.

1st check local fishing rules - you may or may not be allowed to do what you want in the area you are planing to go.
2nd double check those rules - when in the water things can change as to what you are allowed to do.
3rd call - I don't depend on local people I always call the fish and wildlife officials and check their web site.
4th if all the above is a green light and the dates all work out with the rules.
Have fun with this new experience and if cheap works for now I say go for it. Full foot flippers should fit snug not loose or you will get blisters. I don't like open heel for snorkeling or spear fishing.

I’m going to bite on this one just in case it may be a serious post. First let me explain the reason I hesitate, some of the slang you are using I haven’t heard for years. Which is why I kind of think you may be asking seriously. First off friend I don’t think you need to or need to worry about answers to these questions because of the short time you have before your trip. First and foremost you need to learn to swim!! The mask, fins and snorkel is will be of little use if you cant swim. The life jacket is just that a life saver nothing more or did you mean snorkeling vest?

A bit of advise for you from what I assumed from your post I may be wrong and I don’t intend to offend you in no way But you may want to take a class at your local YMCA in swimming. than find a local dive shop in your area and sit down with them for awhile and shoot the bull with them.

Spearing or just snorkeling is one of the coolest sports a person can get into there is a whole new world down there to see and some awesome sights. But when things go wrong and they can fast a lot of times second chances can be slim
