I know there is no rule for this, but…I recently got a Canon G9 (with Canon housing) and will go to the BVI in a few eeks. I always used a throw-away uw camera, so this will be my first time with a real camera.

My land pictures are generally taken in raw, AV – so I will probably use the same approach for uw. However, for land pictures, I have a good feeling of what the aperture to use in different situations…what’s a good default aperture setting for uw pictures? Using the wheel to change it underwater does not seem so easy, so I was thinking of setting it outside, and use it with its pre-set value. Bad idea? Please keep in mind, I will only use it for snorkeling, so generally in good light. Any other advice will be greatly appreciated.

Also, for uw (snorkeling in this case) would you set the while balance to auto? Or the in-camera “underwater”? Thank you.

You can sure set a white balance at say 15' if you're free diving and then try to shoot near those depths... if you're just surface swimming, its easy because you'll be at the same depth.

If i were you i wouldn't worry too much about it, if you're shooting in RAW you can always fine tune post process.

Default aperture has to many variables, might start in the middle- 5.6 or so... see what kind of light and subjects you have and work from there.

Scott

ps. "auto" white balance has never done me any good underwater, i'd definitely go manual.
