This summer my family and I are going on a week long vacation to Islamorada, and we are planning on taking a charter out to a reef to do some snorkeling. I have a Sealife DC1000 and I was wondering if it would be worth it to go ahead and buy an external flash for our trip?

Probably not worth the investment for snorkeling. Most of your pictures are going to be shallow, allowing for sufficient sunlight penetration. If you dive, however, an external flash is a must.

Agree with Coralcop. Absolutely no reason to have an external flash when snorkeling in clear tropical water - ambient light is more than sufficient. For most of my snorkeling photos, I set ISO to 100, and there is no problem with light. I occasionally use the camera's built-in flash for pictures in crevices. Some of these have turned out surprisingly well.
