An Ohio woman died Sunday morning while snorkeling with her family at Sand Key Light, becoming the second Keys snorkeling fatality this month.
According to witness reports, 58-year-old Lana Gandert from Edison, Ohio, was on a commercial snorkeling trip with Sunset Watersports about eight miles southwest of Key West. Also along were her husband and two sons.
About 10:30 a.m., one of her sons noticed she wasn't moving in the water and found her unresponsive. She was pulled into the boat and crew members began administering CPR, says Becky Herrin, spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded and she was taken to Coast Guard Sector Key West, where CPR continued. However, she wasn't resuscitated and paramedics who met them at the dock pronounced her dead.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office has planned an autopsy.
On July 6, Daniel Goepel, 29, of Coral Springs in Broward County died while snorkeling off John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo.
Authorities say he was out with the commercial vessel Dolphin and, while snorkeling, climbed aboard and took off his gear. He returned to the water a short time later with just his mask on.
Two crew members saw him floating on top of the water and pulled him out about 2:15 p.m. He was unresponsive but they told Deputy John Perez they detected a pulse and began giving him rescue breaths. When they couldn't detect a pulse any longer, they started CPR.
The Dolphin brought Goepel back in to the dock at Pennekamp, where paramedics transported him to Mariners Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the Tavernier medical center.
