Authorities say a 49-year-old man has died after being found unresponsive in the water off the Dry Tortugas.

Monroe County Sheriff spokesman Adam Linhardt said in an email that Michael Ray Stephens of Panama City, Florida, was airlifted to the Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island on Wednesday.

Linhardt says Stephens had been snorkeling on Wednesday afternoon when a couple found him face down in the water. They brought him to the moat wall where Dry Tortugas National Park officials began performing CPR.

An autopsy is pending.

This was a guy my husband used to work with (I hadn't met him). Nice guy by all accounts. Husband had heard that he died while on vacation and wondered if it was while diving. Terribly sad, made worse by it happening at such a young age.
