Hello everyone,
I am currently taking my Instructor course and am having a problem finding a "contact" (non diving statement relating to the question or objective, that ALL students could relate to) the question is ... what are the main causes of lung over expansion injuries and how can they be avioded??
Any suggestions would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
 
I had almost the exact same classroom presentation for my IDC - I used the analogy of a balloon popping.

Sounds like a lot of us use that one, But here is another.

ASK how many of you have ever gone to the mountains, and taken a bag of potato chips with you and noticed how the air in the sealed bag expands to the point of poping the bag open as you get higher in altitude!!, Just like when you are asending in the water ??????????

This one worked real well for me!!

Be bold and go for a different angle! You know when you have a really big sticker or decal and you impatiently try to stick it on too quickly and you get those air bubbles trapped underneath. You start pushing them all to the edge but you always end up with a wrinkle. You know a little bit of patience and care from the start would have avoided the issue altogether. You have a good contact for air ending up where you don't want it and somewhere it is hard to get it out from. And, you don't need to scare your class by bursting anything! (You'll end up with a balloon)
 
I just tell my students that lungs have "Zero Tolerance" to over expsion

I borrowed from a friend. His explanation that lungs are as elastic as a paper bag left a nice illustration in my mind and I use it every class. Who hasn’t blown up a paper bag in the past?
