Howdy-

I'm a new member and this is my first post.

In a few weeks I'm going to have to have some minor surgery done to correct a deviated septum and remove some polyps in my sinus cavities. I don't think this is anything too uncommon but I was hoping if anyone can tell me what, if any, short or long-term effects this may have on my diving.

I only received my certification last April and started having problems in June, so I've only got about 5 dives in my book so far. I'm anxious to get many more in but don't want to rush taking any chances.

Any help would be much 'preciated. I'm looking forward to getting lots of useful info and ideas from as many of you out there as I can!

:D

I have had my polyps removed during childhood and never had any uncommon problems with my sinuses while diving. I couldn't think of any reason how it could impare your diving. However, I am not physician, so I'd say ask your doctor first.

Given a successful and uncomplicated septoplasty and resection of sinus polyps, the only long-term effects should be good ones such as improved ease of breathing and reduced bouts of inflammation/infection.

Short-term, given unremarkable surgery a wait of 6-8 weeks before return to diving should be anticipated, although I have seen divers cleared in as little as 3-4 weeks. This is a decision to be made by you & your ENT.

This is educational only and does not constitute or imply a doctor-patient relationship. It is not medical advice to you or any other individual, and should not be construed as such.

Best of luck.

If you remember that medical statement you had to complete when you did your Open Water course, there was a question about sinus surgery.

Once your doctor gives you the ok to return to diving, get a written medical clearance in case you want to do another course within the next year or so. Your dive shop can supply the form.

D-Zyne,

Just had similar surgery, not too bad. Packing material in your sinsuses is the worst since you can't breath through your nose. I asked my doc about the wait and I was told he prefered 3 months. Kinda screws some plans but not going to take the chance. Would hate to think of screwing up what he did. Good luck and post back

Thanks fer the responses, guys-

I actually go in tomorrow morning so I'm a little nervous. But my doc said basically the same thing, 3 months. And I'll be sure to get written clearance, 'cause I still have lots of learning to do.

I'll keep you all posted (pun inteded) on the results.
