My son will be leaving this summer for Army boot camp and I thought I would take him on one last dive trip before he goes. We are both experienced divers and looking for someplace safe, with good diving and that won't break the bank. We live in Arizona, so will have to fly to most places. I look forward to your suggestion and thanks for the help.

Cozumel has some strong value. SoCal/Catalina isn't too far from AZ and has good diving. Hawaii is really nice and has good diving. South Florida and the Keys is also a good place to go.

It really depends on your budget and where you prefer to go.

How much do you want to spend, and how much time do you have?

Have you guys dived the Channel Islands? That's some of my favorite diving in the world -- sun pouring down in columns between the kelp canopies; bright orange, scrappy Garibaldis; juvenile sea lions with an incredible play drive . . . and further west, walls of hydrocoral and corynactis anemones in every imaginable shade of pink. You could do that quickly and inexpensively.

Back in the 60's Canada would have been the most popular option before boot camp.

He's a patriot, not a diserter. It is the young men like him who give those who left for Canada the right to do so and for those who have now come back, a free country to go and do as they believe. Try and live somewhere else and see how much freedom you truly have. My hat is off to him for his decision to serve and to all those who have and those who yet will serve.

We are going to the Long Beach Scuba Show in May, so this may be a great option. I had thought about us diving in the aquarium, but it is pretty expensive for one hour. Do you have any recommendations for dive operations on Catalina? Would you recommend a 7mm for there or can you get by with a 3mm?
