Any good recommendations for shore diving? Not looking to travel too far- was thinking Grand Cayman.

Grand Cayman has some good shore diving, but if you only shore dive there you will miss what Grand Cayman is famous for. Some places really noted for shore diving are Bonaire, Curacao, and Roatan. All further away than Cayman, but so much of air travel is "overhead" an extra couple hours on the plane hardly matters. Within the Caribbean, the specific flight times and connections usually have more to do with how long a trip it is.

Bonaire.......

The shore diving is excellent and so easy.......

The island is really setup for it, lots of dive sites and so much to see.....

Hope this helps......M

SE Florida offers great shore diving from the Blue Heron Bridge in West Palm Beach to the Eurojacks in Dania. My favorite is the Inside Reef at Lauderdale by the Sea. This is a highly structured N-S running reef only about 50 yards offshore just South of the Anglin Pier. It has lots of coral and the usual colorful reef fish, as well as nurse sharks, octopus and various eels and rays.

If you are interested in wrecks, there are several charter boats that will take you out to the numerous wrecks sunk as part of the Broward County Artificial Reef Program. For $60 you get a wreck and a drift dive on a 50 ft reef.

Check out the pictures at www.picasaweb.google.com/fmichalk.

If you stay at the Bridge@Cordova Crew Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, you can dive every day with an instructor for no additional charge. See Home Page. The room rates are affordable and the hotel is located just 2 blocks north of 17th SE on Cordova Road.

Thanks everyone- just came back from Bonaire- I agree- was AWESOME! Will check out your recommendations Michael- Thanks!

Stayed at the Breezes Resort in Curacao last year. Pro dive shop right on site with shore diving. A reef called the Car Pile (an actual car pile ) was a just outside of the hotel breaker. Will need to go back and take some of the excursion trips . Great place to study some specialties too.

How did you like this place? I was considering Breezes Curacao for my spring trip, but wound up getting a really good deal to roatan instead. Anyway I would certainly like input for future reference.

Thanks,

Danny

Breezes Curacao was great for us (family of four divers). Shore dives were easy in and out. Son took Advanced Open Water class with a nice instructor. I took a nitorx specialty class with another. They had a free locker for our gear 20 feet from the dock. Resort is all inclusive keeping the kids busy while I went on a few drift dives. Overalll a plus. Island has an interesting mix of Dutch, Spanish and English influences.
