Our local dive center is considering setting up a week-long trip this July to Dominica. I have never been there. My daughter (age 22) needs to complete her Open Water checkout but is very susceptible to motion sickness on a boat. Is there much/any shore diving available in Dominica? I'd love to have a quality father/daughter vacation and let her complete her designation! Personally, I just want to get back in the water! ;)

Are there many things to do when we aren't diving?

Don't know about shore diving, but Dive Dominica has a wonderfully stable 55 foot Cat....the Sting Ray(?). She still may get a little green, but it may be worth a shot. You may want to contact Dive Dominica about shore diving options.

When I was in Dominica in May Nature Island Dive had OW students doing their check out dives from shore in front of the dive shop. (There are seahorses and frogfish in the shallows right there) I'm sure it would be no problem for them to do her check out dives. Luckily the boats rides are usually very short in the marine park since the dives sites are so close. I get seasick very easily and Dominica is the only destination I have been that I did not chum the waters atleast once. Dominica is beautiful topside and pristine underwater.

The water is flat usually in Dominica and the rides very short. If someone gets seasick in Dominica then I really have no idea where they could ever go diving off a boat without getting sick. Also have her try Bonine, it works gereat for me even in rough seas.

Dominica is fantastic! The diving is great and topside there is more to do if you enjoy hiking and nature than just about any other place I've been too.

Here's a trip report I put together aferr a two week trip this past June. I highly recommend Dominica, both diving and the interior rainforest.
