Making my first trip to AKR in December. Obviously want to get some additional dives in beyond the standard boat dives. How is the shore diving from AKR?

Their adds say unlimited shore diving. Not true. They open a small hut on the cay at about 3:00 and close it about 5:00 on some days. The entry is shallow so you will have to float your BC out a ways until you get deep enough to put it on. Once in, it’s not too bad. Some narrow channels with some surge. Good landscape but not too much life.

I snorkeled over by the dolphin pens (far side). Much more to see. A lot of trash in the water though, also some good snorkeling by the mangroves on the little beach on the cay. Allot of small juveniles in the roots.

There is also a small plane midway between the cay and the dolphin area. Best to go in from the dive shop off the back of a docked boat and swim out to it.

Hope this helps

I wouldn't choose AKR for shore diving. Cocoview and FI have a virtual monopoly on that style of service. The reef structure on the north shore does not lend itslef to shore diving.
