I've read some of the material re this shore dive and I'm getting intrigued! If I was to drop in at La Ceiba and then got into the current would I go north or south? If memory serves the current is from the south to the north and if thats the case how far would Ii get?

It depends on how far out you go. If you stay close in, there is virtually no current. I have swum out to the wall and drifted (north) to Caribe Blu or Villablanca, depending on how fast the current was that day.

I have rarely even hit a current out on "airplane flats", it does depend on how far out you go, of course. We usually just do a check out dive, jump off the La Ceiba pier, don't go too much further than the plane and circle around to the south, (towards the international pier), and then back north and exiting at the La Ceiba pier.
What little current that is there, usually is headed north, (towards town), but because of the 2 cruise ship piers, there is usually very little to none. note: I'm usually there either late April-May or Early September, just for reference.

Okay guys - I agree - MOST of the time it is very lite current and MOST of the time it runs south to north - but don't get lulled into that is always the case! The current on occasion (although rare) can RIP even close to shore! It can also run north to south! JUST CHECK the conditions before entering -ask the guys in the dive shop or come in & ask me - I'm in it all the time, and will let you know!(and I'm right here at the entrance to La Ceiba hotel)
