Valve off. Paper or foil over the top of the neck, followed by packing tape or duct tape. The plain paper or foil ensures no adhesive can contaminate the threads, a potential oxygen/nitrox problem. Then just add some more tape to make sure it stays sealed, and roll the tank in corrugated cardboard, easier than trying to fit a box to it. You probably can find a "lamp box" that will fit and pad it out, or a section of foundation tubing (heavy paper "pipe" used to pour foundation footings) but the corrugated wrap and some well-taped end pieces does just fine.

has anyone every shipped their tanks via fed ex or UPS?
Where/why are you shipping the tanks? A move, selling them, traveling someplace where you can't get that type or any acceptable tank? Just curious, as sometimes someone wants to ship tanks to a another country which may not be worth it except for special cases.
