I was given a Sherwood 4000 first and second stage regulator this weekend. Are rebuild kits available for this regulator? If so, how much would it cost to rebuild the first stage and the two second stages? Also, is it worth fixing, provided the parts are available?

Unfortunately the parts are no longer readily available for that series. The 2nd stage uses many parts still common to Sherwood regulators, but the first stage was a unique design that is very different from anything else they've produced.

I'm curious, do you have the "K" first stage or the "J" first stage? This particular model came with a 1st stage that actually had it's own "J" valve built in. Would be quite the collector's item.

How would I know? I don't see anything in particular that would identify it.

I will try to get a pic on soon.
In the meantime, though, there is a HP port on the right side, bottom end that goes out in a "Y", on the reg with four LP ports on the opposite side.
On the HP side there is an end cap to gain entry to the reg.

I have a service manual for it. It appears that the major issue you will have is the HP seat, the other parts are pretty much standard Orings. According to the manual it come as an assembly. It may be possible to substitute some other HP seat if you can get it out of the carrier. Never worked on one so that is just a guess. The end cap is just that, an end cap. The reg came in 2 versions, one with just an endcap and the other had a built in J valve in place of the cap.

The second stages are pretty much a standard design. As long as the diaphragms are good, it should be an easy fix. My guess is will have to substitute the exhaust valve but a suitable replacement should not be to difficult to find, same goes for the diaphragm if they are bad. The LP seat is a common one so no problems there.

Not a reg I would put back into daily use but well worth restoring if you like old regs. A fun quarry conversation piece however.

If you decide to not repair it, let me know, I will give you a few bucks for it. I like to play with the old regs and making a new HP seat is just the kind of thing I like to do.

As for identifying it, the J valve version will have a black plastic "lever" on one side. If it has the chromed end piece on both sides, it's the other version. Also, the piston was a unique piston to that reg. The main piston O-ring and the back up O-ring are also no longer available through Sherwood. You may be able to locate on via another source but you'd really need to know what you are looking at to be sure.

Also, it didn't use a traditional HP seat as we are accustomed to today. This was made back in Sherwood's "lifetime warranty" days when all the parts for a service were replaced and tossed, similar in thought to their 3107-10 pistons with the crimped in HP seat. The HP Seat and retainer were one piece designed to be discarded and replaced.
