Can anyone provide a picture or maybe a source for the Sherwood 2nd Stage Ofifice Adj Tool? One is P/N TL102. An older one is P/N SYA4701. I'm looking at rebuilding my regs, and I think I can make do with the tools I have, with the exception of this. I'm not sure what it looks like, and how it works. The best I can understand is it goes between the reg and the hose (more specifically the orifice house and the hose) to adjust the orifice. I've searched and googled this, and can't find anything on it other than the service manuals I have. Even the Tools, Repair kits & Accessories Manual doesn't show it. I guess I am really wondering if there is a work around for that tool? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

It's a PITA but you can fairly easily do the adjustments without the tool. The tool allows you to adjust the orfice while the reg is under pressure. Without one you have to take your best guess, put the second stage back on and test until you get it where you want it. After a few regs you can get it down to a few tries. I blow into the reg and adjust until it will not pass any more air, turn it a little more and then install it on the hose and test, repeating the adjustment until it's where I want it. Not the most eff method but works fine if you only doing a few regs at a time.

It probably takes me up to 10 minutes to adjust my 2nds with no special tools but I've got plenty of time. It is also a good opportunity to get real familiar with you reg. I usually adjust it initially with the front cover parts off. Same as Herman - blowing into it and incrementally screwing in the orifice (hold the purge down when turning or it canl cut the seat) to get a start point. Then on IP I'll turn it 1/4 to 1/2 turn each time until it seals. Then back off until it leaks again followed by 1/12 turn increments to seat. Install the cover and repeat as necessary. Scubapro barrel poppet designs are pretty easy as it is just the orifice that needs to be adjusted and adding the cover usually doesn't make much difference. Scubapro R-series are more difficult as you may also need to adjust the lever lock nut and adding the cover tends to set it too freeflowing pretty strongly until the lever height is brought down. It is a good opportunity to see that all the innards are working correctly and that little changes in adjustment make corresponding little changes in performance.

Thanks herman. I kind of thought that was what the procedure was alluding to, but was also kind of surprised that the tool would fit inline.

awap: Are you discussing the Scubapro or the Sherwood? Sounds like the procedure is similiar in any case.

It looks like I have a practice first and second stage to work on. I just bought a used Magnum Reg off eBay for a future pony bottle setup. I didn't realize that there have been years of evolution of that name reg. The one I bought looks like an '80 model. The one I have (the main reason I got this one) is also a Magnum, but much newer. My plan is/was to get the same set of first/second stages since I already have some repair kits, and it would simplify maintenance by learning just one regulator well. And, it would also act as a backup to my main.

Is there a source for replacement parts for Sherwood not included in the service (repair) kits? Or are those protected much like the service kits such that the general public has to take it to an authorized repair tech? I read that some of the parts in the first stage (of the old Magnum I just got off eBay) have been updated, and I know that those are not in my kits.

You can purchase the inline adjusting tool form either deep six (t/w George the owner) or scuba.com. I'll PM you for the parts..........

I'm basing my comments on scubapro. But the only sherwood 2nd schematic I have is a classic downstream 2nd similar to the SP R-series.

Sherwood-Scubapro-whatever, most all of the lever/poppet style seconds are pretty much the same. Some adjust slightly differently but if they have an adjustable orifice, the blow, adjust, hookup, adjust method works on most all of them. Old Dacors without adjustable orifices adjust in a different but similar manner.

Yes. I have one 108 with a fixed orifice. you adjust the lever height with the lock nut and damned if it doesn't work OK. Not great, but OK and simple.
