SHELLY BEACH: Scuba-diver passes away - NSRI
At 09h20, Thursday, 27th December, NSRI Station 20 Shelly Beach were alerted by a dive charter boat reporting to be heading towards Shelly Beach with dive crew onboard the boat conducting CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts on a 65 year old Krugersdorp man reported to have stopped breathing from unknown causes during a scuba dive.

The man had been recovered onto the dive charter boat and the dive charter crew initiated CPR and they raised the alarm alerting NSRI Station 20 Shelly Beach who responded to Shelly Beach to meet the boat on her arrival.

Med-Evac ambulance services, Police Search and Rescue and the SA Police Services were activated and they responded.

On the boats arrival at Shelly Beach paramedics continued with advanced life support CPR but sadly after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted the man has been declared deceased.

The body of the man has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.

The dive charter crew are commended for their efforts.

This almost sounds like a heart attack while at depth.

That seems to be the common guess when anyone over 50 dies while diving. I'm glad it didn't stop me from starting at age 54. One third of deaths in the US are from cardiovascular disease, as much as 10% before age 45, but then two weeks ago - if I'd been two seconds earlier exiting my parked car, I doubt I would have survived when a careless driver backed into my door in a parking lot. I'm in my 70s now, still exploring the wild west and planning dive trips. No one gets out alive.

I've dived out there. The reef (Protea Banks) is not that far from the beach. Nice diving with a LOT of interesting sharks. Quite intimidating at times. IIRC they had shark nets off the beach for bathers.
