Which kills more each year?
I have an irrational fear of sharks but am considering cave diving and it occurred to me my fear might be misplaced.
So, which is more likely..ummm... not a good way to ask, how about which of these is more of a fatality risk to a diver?

I have no facts to base my answer but I would guess Caves! Sharks vary rarely attack a diver if at all!

Well I haven't done the caves, but I have done dives with the sharks and if anything the shark was more scared than I was.

Given the number of divers per year who dive with or around sharks, and the number of divers who dive in caves, I think it's indisputable that caves are more dangerous. There are several cave diving deaths per year, and few, if any diver deaths due to sharks.

I believe I have heard of caves in the Bahamas where you can deco with sharks at the end of the dive.

This might resolve all of you fears at once.

If you get proper training and follow the rules, the risk in cave diving exists, but is relatively minimal. Attempting it without proper training is rolling the dice with your life.

This is kinda what I thought. It makes my irrational fear a bit more irrational I guess...

I've known several friends and acquaintances to die cave diving and only one to get bitten (badly) by a shark (didn't die). It's certainly not statistically valid, but it points in a direction.

Nevertheless, I'm still obssessed with cave diving.

I'd stop [ocean] diving if i got attacked by a shark i think... the fear would be crippling for me, as it is i don't like diving in Sydney when there are tonnes of bait fish around. but when the only sharks that are around are white pointers, bulls, bronze whalers and tigers...

a fear is irritational, that's why its a fear! additionally if we played the numbers game with all activities everyone would be terrified of getting the cab to the airport and fine with flying.

I'm keen as beans to start cave diving, and I'll do it when I've got a few hundred dives up... Mt. Gambier here i come ;)
