I was invited to join Shark Savers and Shark Counters on an 8 day shark tagging expedition to the Socorro Archipelago, Nov 2014. I was wondering if anyone has done a trip like this and if so, what was it like?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

We have a dvd of Socorro. Feel free to stop by & see it. High Voltage!

Thanks, I was wondering more of what a "scientific research trip" was like. It obviously will be different from the normal "pampering the guest" liveaboard trip.

what boat are you on? Never been on a trip like that but once out at Roca Partida the other dive boat was tagging sharks. Shark taggers I believe were diving CCR and the other people on the boat maybe helping out I could not tell.

thanks. looks like a new boat. Same outfit was doing shark studies a few years ago on the Sea Escape. this boat looks much nicer. I have a feeling that you will be doing some normal "fun" dives and assist at other times. Price is in line with the standard trip. As to if its worth it. Sorry no idea. But if they are going to be sitting out at Roca Partida for the entire trip that could be fun (assuming the weather is good)

It seems as though not too many divers have done a trip like this, and for me, that makes it even more interesting. I've decided to go and experience it for myself and I will be sure to post the documentary that I will be filming. I would think the education alone would be very interesting; catching, tagging and releasing sharks is not something that many divers get to do, so I guess it's a good T-shirt to get. It will make for good conversations with dive buddies down the line.

I did a shark research trip in the Sea of Cortez (Jan 2013) on the Sea Escape mentioned above. It was very cool, We were trying to tag Hammerheads in the open water but never really got close enough. (we meaning the doctors on board). They were diving rebreathers. We did however catch smaller sharks in the evening and insert transmitters. Again the docs making the incisions and doing the stiching, but the rest of us helped with recording and keeping the sharks alive and calm. We also recovered ocean floor recievers, cleand them and changed batteries. The diving was fantastic, Socorro is especially known for its Mantas and they did not dissapoint. Also saw white tips, hammerheads, dolphins, one whale and her calf, and one big tiger shark. Enjoy and have fun.

PS: the organization I was with is called Fins Attached and is working hard to stop shark finning. (The covert movies of finning we saw would piss you off, or make you sick)

Mike, I also will be going with Fins attached with Alex. I hope it will be a trip of a lifetime!

Actually, it is Fins Attached that is running it, I've been in touch with Alex.
