A few months ago in Tonga, one of my crew on "ICE" was seriously bitten by a shark. It was on the edge of "Life Threatening" and required a medivace Team/jet to be sent from Australia, Via New Cal. then Fiji. to Tonga and return to get her to specialists. The Locals in Vavau including Medicle teams and cruisers who gave blood were awsome. It was a happy ending and Kylie, the victim, has just spent this season on the "Sam Simon" defending whales against the Japanese in Antarctica. She was our resident "mermaid" onboard "ICE", an experienced free diver, Professional Photographer, and passionate enviromentalist...She is still in love with sharks..even more so..and in a few weeks sets off on a traveling road show in Australia promoting the sensitivites of being around Whale Sharks.
All the details of the attach, when, where, who,and even possibly WHY?? are all on our www.bluetreasure.me blog. You probably did not hear about this attack/incident, as we surely did not grand stand it, even though I proffesionally work with media, because it always creates Phobias in people about getting in the water and "SHARKS!"
The interesting thing was, that a few people got their noses out of joint, because I called it a "SHARK ATTACK"...they suggested it was a "SHARK ACCIDENT" as seen on the "TED" lecture...I had to laugh and yet at the same time could see their reasoning...however!!! in my opinion, it was definitely an "ATTACK" right up to the point of digging the teeth in! at which time the shark decided, as so often happens, that Kilie was not tasty after all and did not continue with lunch! ( fortunately!) she was able to survive!
In between looking for Spanish Galleons, we would swim/snorkle with Whales, often 400mtrs from ICE, often over deep blue, legs dangling and just a couple days before, at dawn!!Hmm?( never again!) The new borne borne whales are at times attacked by sharks. There "may" have been mistaken identity here, because Kylie was finning alongside an inflatable Kayak the size of a whale calf. "Maybe" the shark was about to "Attack" what it thought was lunch!..Sharks to not have accidents when they are about to eat lunch!..
I have been in the water in Antarctica just metres from a lepoard seal attacking/ripping Penguins to peices! I have been dive master on a ship with Ron and Valorie Taylor and watched 20 BIG sharks pummel and push aside a close group of six Photographers in a scrable to "Attack" a dropped Tuna head.....no acident or mistaken identity..just lunch!
So for the purists, I still believe Sharks often "Attack" initially from mistaken identity...which is then, after the event, an "accident", just like being hit by a bus!!
