Hi Scubaboard,

My wife and I are planning a three week trip to Komodo and Bali. It's our first time diving in Asia; we're so excited and a bit overwhelmed, but it's reassuring to have access to the hive mind here.

Lots of questions to come, but I'll start here -

As of now, we're planning on starting with a liveaboard in Komodo. The second week we'll be staying in Tulamben. We're thinking of ending our trip in Nusa Lembongan (haven't decided yet) and Ubud.

Is there a large difference on the island between the three months? We have some flexibility in our schedule, but were looking at the last week of August into September. I've read that July and August can be very crowded. September too? Any differences that would make a month more ideal than others?

Thanks in advance.

Mike

augest /sept is mola mola season in bali...so there will be more divers then usual...esp at nusa penida

tulamben can be crowded or not crowded depending on the schedules of the different dive centres..

komodo if you are not already aware can have quite strong current... go with a good dive operator and be safety minded.

You have picked a wonderful itinerary in a fabulous destination. I would say that there will be little or no difference between the months. Some of the liveaboards move to Raja Ampat from Komodo around November , so check before you make final plans. We hired a private guide on our Komodo LoB as we were not particularly experienced then....it was so good and surprisingly reasonably priced. Stay in Tulamben and in Lembongan , as day trips make for very long days and you get to the sites with all the other day trippers !

Have a wonderful time

Thanks for the info.

Tippytoes, which liveaboard did you use?

Be afraid be very afraid!!! Once you start diving in Indo you will never want to dive any where else!! ha ha
You trip sounds great.
My only suggestion would be to do a week in Tulamben first before your Komodo LOB. That way you can get over jet lag and get back into your diving and get used to the climate before you hit the main attraction, Komodo.
In Tulamben I'm a fan of Scuba Seraya but there are many many options.

Also leave at least 3-4 days at the end to stay in Ubud and unwind and enjoy the amazing culture of Bali.

As for months, September should be great.

PM me if you need any particular help. BUT there is a TON of info here on SB about Bali.

What AlMitch said ... definitely get your diving dialed in before Komodo. Tulamben will be the most passive conditions (generally), then Lembongan/Ubud, then Komodo.

Ditto...everything Mitch said... Bali first...then Komodo. You want to be sharp for currents. Hire drivers on Bali...traffic is loco and confusing. Both places have above water sights that are great too. Night dive on Liberty was amazing for me too.

Thanks for the advice! This is great.

We'll re-arrange our trip to start in Tulamben, then Lembongan, then Komodo, then end in Ubud as we have to fly out of Bali anyway.

I think we're getting closer to booking the three weeks for the last week of August into mid-September.
