I’m spending the month of February doing volunteer recovery work in Leyte but I’m hoping to spend March or longer diving somewhere while getting my PADI DM/IDC certs. Any recommendations? I am finding lots of courses reasonably priced (500-900 USD) but many of these resorts are $70-100/night for accommodations. Maybe I pack a hammock? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA

Somewhat expensive, but take a look at Asia Divers Puerto Galera. I took all my Technical Wreck training through their affiliate Tech Asia, and all their Instructors (at least in the Tech Diving center) are excellent:

Make sure your visa is in order because 30days is usually the limit. Longer one is available but need to apply before your arrival.

There is very good diving down in Padres Bugos in Southern Leyte.

Bed in shared room is available. P400.00 ie. less than US$10.00. You have to eat at the resort because there is no where else nearby.

Cheaper room is available on the island which is tiny.

DM course is available all the time but IDC need to check ahead for the schedule.

I'll second Asia Divers in Puerto Galera.
You don't need to stay at the resort to take the class there either
You can probably get a room nearby for couple hundred bucks for a month

I'm heading to do my DM with Asia Divers next week. Staying for a month and got an apartment nearby for like 16,000 for the entire time. Not sure how their instruction will be so let's see.

IDC is different because they always only run at certain times. Savedra in Moalboal is doing one right this moment. Not sure when the next one is but I have known the Course Director running it for many years, she taught me rescue back in like 2019 and she is an amazing instructor.

Say hello to Allison for me (she's a Toronto Raptors Fan, and Leafs probably as well):

Thanks very much for the replies! I’ve contacted Asia Divers and will explore the other as well. Safe diving all.
