There is an overwhelming amount of information to digest in the scuba diving industry, be it about training, certification agencies, equipment, career paths, diving locations, procedures - you name it. Easy to get lost, off-track, confused, bogged down by irrelevant details.

While I do understand the importance of details, which often can save lives, a general understanding can be almost as valuable.

Thus, I ask: who can recommend resources to look, people to talk to, or any other piece of advice for someone who would like to quickly have a balanced, fact-based, summarized (even if a bit too simplified), big-picture understanding of what is what in the scuba world?

In other words, my question is about valuable, well-delivered summaries that do a great job in classifying information and helping you grasp it. Pages, books and people with the ability to compress years of knowledge in hours or minute. One-stop resources.

It's not clear to me what you are looking for . . . are you looking for sources of information about things like diving technique, decompression theory, or marine life, or are you looking for things about the diving industry and the state of affairs in the world?

As Lynne is stating, just narrow down your scope. Next whatever someone says will be based on their experiences so subjective. An objective glossary that encompasses everything you need to know about scuba-diving in 10 easy pages is ...MMMM.... going to be fantasia. Same goes to reference people...

Some pointers on scuba diving theory.
- Jablonski = The fundamentals of better diving. Shows the basics from a certain point of view but everybody can learn.
- Powell= Deco for divers. The easy refererence regarding decompression theory
- Exley = Blueprint for survival, Caverns measureless to man. For cave-diving
- Lipmann= Deeper into diving, a bit aged but still good reference material

Next we have what??? Equipment? Teaching? Scuba as a profession? Technical? Fauna & Flora? Working abroad? 10 easy steps on running a liveaboard?

Scuba isn't realy about source material, it's about doing it. It all becomes clear if you just go diving... alot!

PS: One word of advice... use spring-straps :D

Hmm. You could ask the same question about the computer industry....you would get the same diffuse answer...no way you can get the answer I think you're expecting :-) both are big industries.... Both in learning, education and equipment..

This site is just what you are looking for. If you have a particular question do a quick search and you'll usually find multiple threads on the issue just keep in mind what beester said about it being subjective information. Contained within those threads you will more often than not, find links to actual books/videos/trainers if that is what you actually seek.

I think you have found the place.

What do you want to know?

Please remember this is the internet, the information provided is worth every cent you paid for it. ymmv....

Scuba board is a great resource. You might also find scubadiverlife.com useful. Finally, contact PADI, SSI, NAUI, and other certification agencies concerning promotional and informational literature they may offer without cost. Finaly, diveterritory.com offers links to many websites with tons of information.

You've already found the best resource for unbiased, fact based information about scuba. It will take some filtering, but it's all here on scubaboard.
