Hi Scuba Board,
My name is Kody and I am a technical diver and divemaster from Vancouver B.C. This is my first post on Scuba Board and I thought I would try it out because of all the positive responses I have read in other posts. I always knew all divers were cool friendly people and this is just confirming that point!
I will be traveling to Australia come the end of January with my family and will be staying in Sydney, Cairns, and Airlie Beach for 4 weeks. It is a family oriented trip as my brother who is also a diver (same certifications as me) will be moving to Sydney to attend law school! However of course we are going to sneak in as much diving as possible.
That being said we are pretty frustrated with our diving options thus far. The customer service has been great from all of the dive shops and tours etc in that they have gotten back to me, and they have answered my questions thoroughly, but we are having difficulties finding a dive shop or liveaboard that will allow us to do the type of diving we are interested in.
I am wondering if any locals or previous travelers might be able to point me in the right direction? If you are interested in diving near or around any of the areas I've mentioned and know a good spot and want a buddy (or two), send us a PM, let us pay for your air fill and let's go for a dive! If by some miracle anyone is interested in doing a technical dive or knows a smaller business who runs a charter, please let me know!
What we are looking for:
I have long given up the hope of doing some technical diving while in Australia and now we are just trying to find a charter, shop, liveaboard, etc, that allows for buddy divers (I do not want to pay $200 to follow a group of open water students around the reef for 30 minutes), will allow us to use our sidemount rigs and rent us the extra tanks to do so, will allow 45-60 minute dives and as much diving in the day as possible. We have traveled to a few tropical destinations and have never had so much trouble meeting this bare minimum criteria.
The diving options in Australia are looking pretty abysmal at this point. Please help!
