Hi Scuba Board,

My name is Kody and I am a technical diver and divemaster from Vancouver B.C. This is my first post on Scuba Board and I thought I would try it out because of all the positive responses I have read in other posts. I always knew all divers were cool friendly people and this is just confirming that point!

I will be traveling to Australia come the end of January with my family and will be staying in Sydney, Cairns, and Airlie Beach for 4 weeks. It is a family oriented trip as my brother who is also a diver (same certifications as me) will be moving to Sydney to attend law school! However of course we are going to sneak in as much diving as possible.

That being said we are pretty frustrated with our diving options thus far. The customer service has been great from all of the dive shops and tours etc in that they have gotten back to me, and they have answered my questions thoroughly, but we are having difficulties finding a dive shop or liveaboard that will allow us to do the type of diving we are interested in.

I am wondering if any locals or previous travelers might be able to point me in the right direction? If you are interested in diving near or around any of the areas I've mentioned and know a good spot and want a buddy (or two), send us a PM, let us pay for your air fill and let's go for a dive! If by some miracle anyone is interested in doing a technical dive or knows a smaller business who runs a charter, please let me know!

What we are looking for:
I have long given up the hope of doing some technical diving while in Australia and now we are just trying to find a charter, shop, liveaboard, etc, that allows for buddy divers (I do not want to pay $200 to follow a group of open water students around the reef for 30 minutes), will allow us to use our sidemount rigs and rent us the extra tanks to do so, will allow 45-60 minute dives and as much diving in the day as possible. We have traveled to a few tropical destinations and have never had so much trouble meeting this bare minimum criteria.

The diving options in Australia are looking pretty abysmal at this point. Please help!

You have written to me direct already and I answerd before I saw your post here. Tech diving is virtually non existant up here in Cairns (as I wrote) but much more accessable in Sydney and am sure a lot of posts wil be put up here to help out.

Try a few of the dive shops there. But also look to hire gear and hook up with local divers. This is the best way. Cairns is harder, as all the diving is so far out you need a boat to get there. They also have to cater for a wide range of experience, so it is very, very hard to get on a trip just for experienced divers (except the ones I mentioed like those going to the ribbon Reefs like Mike Ball, Spirit of Freedom etc).

Good lkkc though and know you will get a good responce from those here on this forum :)

Thank you for the information and for your email!

That is actually good news because if (when) I revisit Australia once (several) times over the course of my brother's 3 years in law school I will be staying with him in Sydney. I am sure he will have figured it all out by then and I can just show up with my gear and join him!

We will have to alter our flights but it turns out Mike has room on Spoilsport for a 3 day trip while we are in Cairns. I am about to book our trip. I am too excited to put it into words. Looks exactly like the type of diving we are interested in doing. I will let Scuba Board know how it goes after our trip :)

ps still looking for diving at Airlie Beach and Sydney!

The little I know about the tech diving in Sydney. Basically, there are less & less operators each year.

SXD,

http://www.southerncrossdivers.com.au/

is the only tech service I know of in Sidney at the moment. They may even have there new boat operating around the time of your visit.

Scuba Haven at Port Macquarie does a little, to around 50mt, from time to time.

Kern - thank you these sites look great. This is the type of local diving I have been hoping for. Would sure love to check out those wrecks... I will get in touch with the owners/operators and see if it is a possibility. Thanks again for your post and information!

You could also hire a boat?
Check out michaelmcfadyen website for some good deep wrecks, quite a few in the tech range.
