Has anyone stayed/dived with Seagrape Plantation? We're going to have a few adults in Roatan this June and we're looking to stay in or near West End. I thought the rates at Seagrape looked pretty good but i wasn't sure what the hotel and diveshop were like... any feedback is appreciated as always ;)

We stayed at Las Rocas and really enjoyed it. It is small and rustic but there was never more than about 6 people on our dives. 4 being us! Is is at the end of west bay so it was very quiet. The staff was awesome and we loved the diving...Nobody ever talks about it but we were very happy with our decision to stay there.

I've not stayed there but I rented the house next door in May 08. So I can help with questions about that area.

Being on the point the breezes there were better than in town. There's still a bug problem at night though. If the surf's up, waves break against the ironshore there. With screens, it's nice to sleep to at night - esp. with a little rain to cool things off. Otherwise you'll want A/C. It's really quiet in that area at night.

It's a leisurely 10min. walk from there to the West End. Several times my friends returned earlier than I did so I've walked the road alone at night and never felt like there was a problem. Bring flashlights, it's dark under the tree canopy and there's no streetlights in that area. Our power went off nightly - our house had it's own backup generator so it must be common.

It's probably obvious but that whole area is on rough ironshore so there's absolutely no beach. It's actually hard to get to the waterline as the ironshore is about 3-4'. I know SeaGrape has a walkway to the water, we thought about trying to do a shoredive from there once.

One other place to consider might be Luna Beach Resort. It was the other place we considered as not only do they have rooms but also 2-3 BR guesthouses on the property. And their own diveop. It's a little too far to walk to the majority of the West End but they have a water taxi. In the end my friends decided they wanted to stay in the West End so some of them stayed at Coconut Tree Cabins (we dove all week with Coconut Tree Divers) and I rented the house.

fwiw if there's 6 or less of you (3 couples - all the beds are queens) you might want to consider the house: http://www.roatanpropertymanagement.com/images_sealodge/photos.htm

The whole place cost me around $1600 total for everything. It's private, has great views and is all deck. Both the living/dining room and MBR suite have their own deck upstairs and downstairs the deck is covered and goes completely around the house - there's a couple of hammocks, sitting areas and even an outdoor dining area. All have outside fans/lights - you'll want the fans for the bugs. The two bedrooms downstairs are just bedrooms with ensuite baths. All have private entrances. Very nice, very clean, pretty new. The one downside is the kitchen is limited - small refrig, coffee pot, microwave, dishes included. There's a day/night watchman in a small hut nearby - he watches the house and another next door. Mostly for us his job was to start the generator as needed - we didn't see anyone else nearby the whole week.

The owners are really nice people also, they arranged airport van transport both ways and met us on arrival and departure on our schedule. Our driver actually lives 1/4 mile down the road towards town so if you wanted to go somewhere else you have that option. Or get cab(s) at the West End, there's a cab stand across from Coconut Tree Divers.

On the contact page header picture on the Seagrape site, it's the house all the way to the right on the point -the one with the grey roof. I would rent it again.

that's awesome, thanks steve... actually sea lodge is the other place we're considering (now if they would just email us back). There's a chance though that we'll have more than 6 which is why i'm also looking elsewhere.

We're looking to be close to west end, a short-ish walk at most so that sort of DQ'd luna beach for us. It's looking as if our two finalists are seagrape, or sea lodge and diving with Coconut Tree. I don't think we'll make a wrong choice either way... i've heard positive feedback on both diveshops.

Thanks again.

Have you looked at Cocolobo next door? Admittedly the only thing I saw of either was driving by one day but it looked newer.

yea that was actually my first choice but a couple of the others wanted to look at something even cheaper, though looking at it again cocolobo is barely more expensive. The dive packages at seagrape are a great value though, 17 dives with the 7 night package.

My wife and I stayed at Seagrape for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Years a year ago. The accommodation suited us perfectly. We stayed in one of the ocean front cabins. The room was fairly basic, but it was air conditioned and had a small fridge. The resort had a nice pool that was never crowded. There is no restaurant, but it was only a 10 minute walk in to West End where you had lots of choices where to eat. I am surprised there hasn't been more positive feedback on this forum about the diveshop. From what we saw, the dive boats where the nicest of any we saw in West End. You store your gear at the diveshop which was right at the boat dock. This seemed much more convenient than most of the shops in town where the dive shop was accross the road from the waterfront. We were very happy with the staff at the shop, although I think they may have changed their divemasters since then. We loved Roatan, and will return soon. We have dove several places in the Caribeean, and Roatan is by far our favorite. We have also been fortunate to dive many locations in Asia, and although we enjoy the diving there more, you can't beat the conveniece of Roatan from Canada.

I got back our latest trip to Roatan on FEb. 1st. We were booked at Cocolobo, and we had some friends try to join us at the last minute and Cocolobo was booked up. So I recommended that they stay at Seagrape (almost next door).
The room they had was decent.
However, after a day of diving (with Coconut Tree Divers) we decided to relax around the pool at Seagrape. The resort was very quiet that week with only one other couple staying there. There were 5 of us, 3 staying at Seagrape, 2 at Cocolobo. The owner of Seagrape approached and in explicite words which I cannot repeat here, asked us who we were and what we were doing. So we nicely explained that 3 of us were HIS guests, and that the other 2 were from Cocolobo. Again in words I cannot repeat, he told us that the pool, grounds, etc. were for Seagrape guests only. I have not been spoken to that rude in many years. I can understand if the pool/area were crowded, or his guest only policy, but the way he talked to us, was un-acceptable. He literally kicked us off his property. So from then on we hung out at Cocolobo, which accepted our guests with open arms. Needless to say I will NEVER recommend this hotel to anyone.

We have stayed at both Sea Lodge and Cocolobo and dove with both native Sons and Coconut Tree Divers. We enjoyed Cocolobo better and, depending on the season [Feb should be fine], would recommend you try the upper floors [better breeze]. Nice breakfast. We had a wonderful time with both Native Sons and CCT. Found both very solicitious and safety minded. Quite fun!

My wife and I have stayed at seagrape a couple of times over the last few years and just love it! We like that it's away from the bustle of west end, but still close enough to walk anywhere. The dive op is run by Luis (sp?) who instructs for classes and leads dives sometimes. He's a great DM, often using his little wire pointer to show off the critters he's located. Great boats and rental gear also. Last time we stayed there we did a few dives with other operators and some with Luis and ended up wishing we dove with him all the time. The one down side is there's no place to eat on premises, but it's no problem going next door for breakfast or into west end for dinner. One last benefit is little or no bugs because of the ironshore.

Our next visit we'll be doing a package with seagrape- seems like a good value
