I am just getting started with underwater photography.

Does anyone know if th Sea & Sea YS-30TTL strobe usable on current generation cameras?
maybe, but i would not recomend it for someone just starting out.

most common setup these days is to use fibre optical trigger in ttl mode. this strobe can not do that as it can not handle the "preflash".

it can connect to a camera hotshoe via a wired sync cable (and may require a ttl converter) or it could be used as an optical slave for manual flash (no ttl pre flash).

So could it potentially run off a Nikon 1 J1 or J2?

B&H has a nice housing on sale for Nikon J1 and as a budget minded beginner I was considering that until I saw the limited flash options for that camera. The housing has an external hot shoe.

So I am wondering if the older Sea & Sea would work correctly with the Nikon 1.

I would need to either adapt or alter the older sync cable to a hot shoe. But would it work???? :-)

cold shoe versus hot shoe.

a ys-30 is worth about $30. i would not spend $300 trying to make it work. spend the money on a more appropriate strobe.
