All the port combinations are driving me nuts! Someone please give me some advice...

I want to use the 60mm and 105mm VR Micro Lenses with the same NX Standard Port (Or NX Custom Port) if it can be modified. I also would like to use a woody's Diopter by inserting the diopter itself into a Sea&Sea Lens Cover for this port...see here;

http://wetpixel.com/forums/index.php?showt...;hl=woody's

My questions are;

1) Will the NX Standard Port be able to be modified just like the NX Custom Port? I read that you can cut out a small rubber nub inside the port so that the 105VR can fit in conjunction with an SX Extension ring. Are these two Ports identical in size? What is the purpose of the knobs on the Custom Port?

2) Will Focus gear for the 105VR fit in this NX Standard Port mod? If not, are there any MF options for the NX Custom Port instead? I have heard that the 105VR hunts a lot and MF is necessary at times.

3) What size woody's diopter should I buy? 110mm? 100mm? Smaller?

Thanks for your patience with my newbie questions.....the options and cost constraints are overwhelming me! I already have an SX Extension ring and an Optical Dome port planned. The SX can do double duty with the NX Standard Port for the 105VR Lens if this works. It will save me from buying and carrying 1 additional Port just to use the 105VR. I hope to use these two Port combos with

10-17 Tokina
18-50 F2.8 Macro HSM Sigma
60mm Micro Nikon
105mm VR Micro Nikon

Your advice is much appreciated!

OK....I think I answered this question myself after doing much research....I wish I could just go down to a shop to sort this out....but no such luck.

I believe I can use a Sea & Sea Port for the 105VR such as the DX Macro Ports for BOTH the 105VR and 60mm Macro lenses??

Focus gears for both should be able to fit too I assume. I know now for a fact that I CANNOT use the focus gear for the 105VR with either the Custom or Standard port even if I get the lens to fit...

I got a headache from all these ports.....I said that out loud and my wife thought I was drinking port....she almost yelled at me cause she thought I had finished all the whiskey...

For the 105VR you cannot use the Standard/Custom Flat Ports. The DX Macro Ports is the way to go. There are two components, the DX Macro Port Base and the DX Macro Port 52. You can use both the 60mm and 105vr in those ports. We recommend going that route so that you can minimize the cost of ports.

I use the NX Custom flat port with the XS Extension Ring for my 105mm VR. I had it modified so that the fat VR lens would fit in the port. That way I only have to add or remove the extension ring to switch between my 60mm & my 105mm VR.

I did not want to have to have too many ports that I would have to deal with when travelling.

I also have a focus gear that has been modified on a lathe to be used with the 105 VR in the NX Custom Flat Port.

Thanks for your replies guys....and thanks for the PM fisheyeview.

I think I will go ahead and get the Athena OPF-TMP105VR pro-S for the 105VR....it's lighter than S&S's DX Port and 1 piece.

I thought about the Athena port. I liked the idea of being able to screw on a wet diopter to the port that was a lot more powerful than the Nexus diopter.

Good luck, and be sure to share pictures.
