I am using a Sea & Sea YS-27DX which has been discontinued for reasons unknown to me. This was a powerful compact strobe that had several manual settings and a pre-flash override for cameras like the Canon G10 in Manual mode. It was priced between $250 and $350

The current product line for Sea & Sea strobes are the YS-17TTL at around $250., the YS-110 alpha at around $600. and the YS-250 Pro at around $1000.

IMHO the YS-17TTL is useless. No pre-flash override, only two manual settings, far less coverage than the 27DX, far less power with only two AA bats.

What were you thinking S&S?

There's lots of YS-27DXs available for now.

DEMA is next week, I expect there might be some new product announcements.

Hi Gilligan - I just bought a 110a for about $US450 and love it. There is a site on ebay that sells them nyxell out of Hong Kong if you look for this store you will find him. He is good to deal with and sells mainly on the US ebay.

As Jack says if you want a 27dx they are still about, I looked at it when I bought the 110a for my Oly e520. The story from my reading of it was that they were a bit under powered. If I knew they were as good as you say I would have bought one myself. The 110a is a fairly powerful little flash.

I have a weakness for SnS as I have used their flashes for 15 years and never had a leak apart from one. I used my YS 50 for 2 years without ever closing it properly. The back just fell out as I was getting back in the boat in the Maldives about 3 years ago! I washed it out and dried it and it still works perfectly. When I looked at it closely there was an obvious 'click' to secure the back in place that I had never noticed.

I still have my 27DX and love it. I bought it from nyxell. The main reason I didn't get the 110 alpha was because I was in the Philippines at the time and their import tariffs are outrageous and unpredictable then added to a 12% VAT.

I did have one small leak in the battery compartment and never did figure out why other than not enough grease. The bat cover was in the "locked" position. I rinsed it out with fresh water, used WD 40 to clean it and it works fine.

As for the design of the S&S bat cover; take note that they changed it on the YS17 to a thread-on type like the Inon strobes. Why? If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Do you get US warranty coverage if you buy from ebay like that?

According to MCD the YS27 has not been discontinued. Lots on the shelf.
YS90, 110 & 27 are all essentially the same regarding coverage & output. Main difference is that 27 is strictly a slave unit. On a recent trip I got 650+ flashes from YS27 on 1/2 power (2700 NiMH's). Neat little unit.

I love the unit. There may be many in circulation for sale but it's on the Sea & Sea website as a discontinued item.

I'm not looking to buy one just wondering why S&S would discontinue such a great little strobe and temporarily leave nothing in its place?

Two new strobes will be released next year according to S&S.
