Has anyone used the Sea and Sea YS90DX with a Canon A-series camera? I have the A80 and just ran across a deal on lightly used YS90DX

I suspect the 90DX will only workin manual or "A" mode. Right?

Also did you cover the camera's internal strobe with black tape or something?

I think you also need the fiber optic sync cable.

I'm also looking for a used (lightly or not) strobe. In theory, with the YS-90 & a digital camera, you set the camera to manual mode; set the aperture to some value (say 4.0 or 5.6 to get some depth of field); set shutter to some value (say 1/125); set manual flash; then; set the strobe to the f/level you've set your camera.

See the Sea&Sea manual at http://www.seaandsea.com/ for details.

All I can find on the Sea and Sea web site is a note that reads

"Product instruction manuals will be available to download soon. Please check back."

There are two versions of the YS90, the ys90DX and the ys90AUTO. (and the ys90ttl for non-digital cameras) I think you have describbed the "YS90 AUTO".

The auto will try and send out the amount of light based on a given f-stop. With the DX,
light output is controlled manualy. You adjust the light down for close subjects and up
for distant ones

You are right about needingthe sync cord. also needed is the mounting arm and tray

You need to click on "maintenance and service" then, "user manuals."

That's how I got the DX (I think!) manual. The DX sticker tells you how far away your critter should be for any given f/stop. I think you can also dial the strobe power, but I had to run, so I didn't finish reading the manual.
