In the event that manufactures do not outfit either the new G11/S90 Canons or the new Panasonic GH1 with a decent housing and ports, what do people think of this:

Sea & Sea RDX-450D Housing for Canon Digital Rebel XSi and T1i [ss.06144.d] - $1,399.95 : Reef Photo & Video!, The Underwater Photo Pros

While it is a housing for an evil dSLR it appears compact, light, made from ABS or polycarbonate materials, 200 foot rating and best it appears compact and has live view and the price sans ports is not out of line with the Ikelite stuff.

I think I could make up a very compact unit with a homemade dual or single tray and short arms on my twin Inons. Run the Tokina fisheye lens probably.

Thoughts? Durability? Function?

Nice looking housing...at a steal of a price...I'm so happy with my G10, was thinking about buying a backup and when they discount the G10 housings, to make room for the G11, then buying a nice one...but in the Panasonic has a housing... I am so there.

It is a great housing and the price is very good. The new T1I is a fantastic camera and the tokina 10-17 is reason enough to buy one.

You are so predictable :D but I hear what you are saying.

Bill, thanks for the info, yes, it does look good. I don't think it would be that much larger than my Canon 570/Ike/Inon dome. But, of course, by the time one adds the dome, assorted parts, camera and lens the price would grow quite a bit. But, I don't know, thus my asking.

Nem,

Believe me once you add even the simplest of home made base tray and arm adapters it will be bigger than your compact rig.

But that said the Tokina 10-17mm is THE reason to go dSLR. It is literally the only lens I use these days.

Ikelite housings are close to same price and you can make your own smaller handle and tray. But you would need cords to even fire your INON strobe(s) manually. Or figure out a way to attach your fiber optic on the front prism area and trip the inside flash each shot.

Off to Cozumel with SimonBeans, Debbie and a gang tomorrow bright and early!

That salty water is calling me :)

Thanks Dave, certainly I have not ruled out an Ikelite, as you know I am just exploring this area in the event something more compact does not present itself, saw that S&S housing and was just curious. Yeppers, it is that Tokina lens that is the real attraction. You are right, it will be bigger than I want, seems I am up against the wall, give up and conform or continue to resist the Kool Aid. I don't conform well but then maybe I should.

I hope y'all have a great dive in Coz, not been there in a few years. Make the old guy behave ;). I have put the Whaler away and I am installing mud/snow fenders on my bicycle, winter is not far away. :shakehead:

The price is the one that made me upgraded. I am now a proud owner of the Canon T1i in the RDX-500D housing. Sorry Nemo, had to dump my A570 for something like this. :blinking:

Thanks for the info, you have a nice rig. That is why I am curious about the housing, it looked to be compact and had the optical fiber ports. Just because I inquired about something does not mean I am running to the store to get one. I was curious about the housing and in particular it's functionality and durability and overall handling and size. A mouthful for sure. It looks to be very compact and your photo confirms that it is a relatively compact rig---for a dSLR. Thanks again for the photo, very useful, I think I will probably need to be a bit more compact than that but please carry on with the discussion.

BTW, "Nemo" was captain of the Nautilus, Nemrod is a mythical hunter from Greek mythology, so they claim, ;) .

Well, lets see how the camera works since having a nice looking rig doesn't mean its going to take good pictures now would it Nemo ;)

The cost of the RDX series housing is cheaper then the MDX too since the MDX is like close to $3,000 while the RDX including the TTL converter was only $2,100. And yeah, the RDX can use fiber optic cables besides the sync cords.

Have to admit that my best camera up to date was the 570IS and the G5 because they were so easy to use. The the new DSLR here is like a new territory for me I seriously hope its worth it.

If you want, I could post a picture of the G5 ikelite housing side by side with the RDX. The G5 housing is probably the same size as the G9 I think.

Yes, if you could, please do, thank you.
