I am new to the board an have a question regarding the SDI Master Diver
Certification. I have recently been certified as an SDI Rescue Diver and inquired at
my shop about getting the SDI Master Diver certification. My Advanced Open Water is in PADI and I have 190 logged dives. My shop says that I will need four more
specialty dives in addition to the ones I took for my PADI Advanced
Open Water. My review of the requirements for this certification do not seem to
indicate a need for any further specialties after obtaining Rescue. Is this true?
It would seem that once one completes Rescue then Master Diver is just an
application process. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The way I read it, SDI Advanced Scuba Diver certification requires 25 dives or more PLUS four specialty courses.

International Training :: Get Certified :: Advanced Diver Development Program :: English

The SDI Advanced Diver Development Program was created to make truly “Advanced Divers”. During the course your SDI Instructor will take you through four SDI specialties (deep, navigations, photo, video, etc. as examples) covering all the skills and subjects, so that by the end you will feel comfortable conduct dives of a similar nature….

Master Scuba Diver certification requires SDI Advanced Scuba Diver, Rescue, and 50 plus dives.

International Training :: Get Certified :: Master Scuba Diver Development Program :: English

You have already shown that diving is the sport for you by completing your Open Water Scuba Diver certification, Advanced Scuba Diver certification, Rescue Diver certification and you have logged 50 total dives, now take the next step. The SDI Master Scuba Diver Development Program is an earned certification and the highest non professional level of certification….

I am guessing that PADI Advanced Open Water does not qualify as SDI Advanced Scuba Diver. I wouldn’t get too excited. I doubt anyone is going to be too impressed based on a qualification that only requires 50 dives, all of which could have been during training under supervision.

Under the SDI system, Advanced Diver isn't a course as such but a recognition level. The SDI Advanced Adventure Diver course is very similar to a PADI Advanced Diver course, however it would only count as one of the four specialty courses that you need if you want an Advanced Diver card. The specialty dives i.e. deep, nav, etc. that you did on your Advanced course were not specialty courses, just experience dives. For SDI Advanced and Master Diver recognition levels you require four specialty courses, for which you would have received a certification card for each. You definitely meet the minimum number of dives requirement.
Hope that helps.
