Going to take the new little sd700is out for a test run this weekend. I"m testing it as a backup to the big camera, it's main function is land snapshot camera, so I understand it doesn't have much manual control. And yes, I know, I know, I have to RTFM. :-)

That said, does anybody have any suggestions for best settings, scene modes, etc to use with this camera:

(a) available light macro (i.e., very very shallow, bright conditions) (I assume I should just use regular macro mode (not digital) and dial up the iso as much as I need to? works great on land).

(b) available light wide angle (M, with low iso dialed in, or should I try kids/pets mode or something? I assume that tries to use a faster shutter speed?)

and

(c) non-ttl slave strobe (probably for macro or fish?). In M mode with macro scene mode, it will flash, and focus close.
If somebody's already done the homework of figuring out which settings are best, I"d love to piggyback on that. :) And would you cover up the flash diffuser so that no light from the camera gets to the subject, only light from the strobe, or do you let the light fall where it may?

I'm thinking to stay away from Underwater mode and just use custom WB - good idea? bad idea?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. - I understand that "M" on this camera isn't really "M". Although my one gripe is that it would be nice if they told you the shutter speed, even when the camera wasn't worried about shake, at least after you took the shot. Grr. Oh well. It's a point and shooter's point and shoot. :-) And it will be perfect for my snapshots!

I'm using a SD800 IS... Erm.. I stuck with M mode, using the cloudy setting for WB, and do not use digital macro, cos like you mentioned earlier, it doesn't allow the flash to fire.

Results are pretty decent. I use a sealife strobe too, and i get REALLY REALLY close to achieve macro shots.

Good luck!

Thanks! Off to chilly Santa Barbara Island tomorrow. I have this huge list of things to try, but I know I"m going ot forget half of them. :-)

Just a tip: I'd check out the Fantasea Nano strobe. Phenomenal, tiny little strobe. Small range, but for the type of shooting you're likely to do with little, full-auto P&S cameras like that, it's an excellent match. I know a couple of local shooters who have done amazing things with them, paired with small P&S cameras.

Kewl, thanks for the idea. I saw somebody with something like that on the boat on Saturday, he liked his too.
