I was just ready to take the plunge and buy a S80, until I read an interesting thread concerning the SD700. When I'm not using the camera for diving,I plan to give it to my wife. I'm still leaning toward the S80 -- any thoughts?

Thanks Bill

S80 has more options that you can play with (apperture settings, shutter speed, manual mode etc.) which you may find useful (either now or later) - SD700 is more of a pure point and shoot (although it is a good one) - both will give good results underwater.

topside - SD700 is smaller (so can easily fit in a pocket - S80 is slightly bigger but still pretty small.

I went for the S80 and am very happy ith it (used to have an older S500 but flooded it)

Will you ever be serious enough about photography to use the manual control modes, such as aperature and shutter speed? If no, get the 700 and enjoy.

But if you're going to want to explore this field to a fuller extent, and might want the ability to shoot wide angle or extreme macro with strobes and add-on lenses, then you'll want the S80.

Thanks for the help. The S80 is hard to find since Canon has stopped making this model -- there is apparently an update due out in fall.

Thanks Funland111

Where did you hear that Canon stopped making the S80? They are still showing it on their web site. I have the S80 and love it. Used it last month in Grand Cayman and got some great photos.

I actually had to replace mine recently, and I, too, had a hard time finding one. Best price/place I found was Adorama. Good luck. :)

I was reading the posts on www.dpreview.com and people comfirmed that production has stopped on the S80, and a new model is coming out in the fall --- who knows. Stu in fl --- I enjoyed your quote on success -- that's my golf game!!!!!!!!!!

wow that was a short product life for the S80... wonder if its successor will have RAW capabilities like the S70!
