Hey everyone,

I got an offer for a new Scubapro X-tek Wing dual bladder 60 lbs of lift for 275.00. I have been going back and forth on whether I want to do sidemount tek or back mount tek. I have been leaning towards side mount, but my LDS has a back mount tek instructor so that might push me towards that route due to convenience of an instructor I trust and like.. I havent been able to meet him to ask my question so I am asking all you.

I have looked these up to see what they are worth and websites either say discontinued or out of stock and dont have a price listed. I want to know what they go for and are they in demand. I ask because If I do decide to go sidemount after having bought this, so I dont lose out on a potential deal, would I be able to sell it for what I paid for. I dont want to jump on this if I will lose my ass in the end.

I hope this makes sense.

This deal is for the Wing only.

Thanks

Just to ad my opinion. Come down to cave country and take a Cavern & Intro course. Use rental gear and then with the aid of an experienced instructor chose for yourself.

I don't know about your area, but here in the Monterey Bay, I see loads of Halcyon Evolve, Oxycheq Vertex or Hollis C wings with lift capacity in the low to mid 40s. Sixty pounds of lift is a lot and can be difficult to vent. I have seen plenty of tech divers that sport multiple stage/deco bottles and never have I seen any use a 60lb wing.

I think a different wing with a more moderate lift capacity will serve you better and probably have a better resale value. While Scubapro BCDs are well regarded in the recreational diving community, they have almost no presence in the technical diving community.

Thank you. I knew 60 lbs was a bit much, but didn't want to pass up on a good deal. I dive HOG 23# wing so I would definitely need to upgrade. (I love HOG. Actually all my gear is HOG) Also I understand I wont need that much lift or dual bladders if i dive dry, which most likely will be the case. But again I didn't want to pass up a potential good deal so I wanted all your input.

I had no idea that Scubapro doesn't really have a presence in the Tec community.

Thank you

Just to clarify, it's their BCDs and Wings that haven't gained popularity in the technical diving area. Scubapro regulators are highly regarded and often used in the technical diving community. From the GUE divers, with whom I often dive, I always see Scubapro, Apeks or Atomic regulators.

If you are patient, you can find blem Halcyon Evolve 40lb for low $300. Single bladder of course. I have not dived a X-tek dual bladder 60lb wing, but I have used a Halcyon evolve 60. There is a noticeable difference between it and the 40lb version especially on skinner tanks like LP85 or HP100.

Do you need dual bladder?

i agree with this. I picked up a 40lb Evolve wing for $200 in perfect condition. I also have a 60lb evolve and unless you're dragging along tons of stages and other equipment, it's just too big and too much lift.

No I will be diving dry, therefore was told I will not need a dual bladder

How many stage bottles will the Evolve 40 handle?

How many stage bottles will the Evolve 40 handle?

The real question is "how buoyant is your suit and what volume of back gas are you using?"

The equation I use to size doubles wing is:

Minimum capacity = buoyancy of your drysuit + the weight of your back gas (gas not tanks) + 3 lbs.

If you use this deco / stages are not a factor.

For many divers this leads to something greater than 40 lbs and well less than 50 lbs.

This particularly true in the local waters i.e. San Diego to Oregon.

For example shell suit with ~ medium undies will typically be in the middle 20's 22-28 lbs.

"Starter doubles" typically something like 2 x hp 100's will hold 16 lbs of air or nitrox (Trimix weighs less)

28 + 16 + 3 = 47 lbs.

A diver using these tanks needs to start the dive weighted so they are ~19 negative. That allows them to hold a shallow stop with empty back gas tanks, *and* add a bit of gas to their drysuit while doing so.

That means to stay at the surface at the start of the dive they will need to use maybe 23 lbs of the capacity of their wing, 19 to overcome their ballast and a bit more to get their chin out of the water.

If they start with a 49 lbs wing and use 23 lbs they have 26 lbs in reserve.

An al 80, full of air or Nitrox and rigged with a stage kit and reg is about -4 lbs. al 40's are about -3 lbs.

*6* al 80's (26 / 4 = 6+ ) is a lot of stages…………….
