Can someone PLEASE help me with a step by step instruction of a rebuild of an old scuba pro R109? I bought it at a garage sale for 10$ (sweet steal) in a plastic bag with all the parts. I've cleaned the parts and replaced o-rings and now I can't seem to get the internal parts together. Every time I try to screw the adjuster in to finish up, something pops and the lever no longer seems to be spring loaded. :confused:Please help! Also is silicone grease ok to use on internal parts of this reg?

Maybe one of the Mods can move this thread to the Regulator or Vintage forum where many folks are big fans of the R109 and I'm sure will have good advice.

I'm vaguely familiar with the R109 (have had a few of them apart), and 1) congratulations on getting a steal of a deal on a great reg and 2) it sounds like you may not have the lever in the correct position when you assemble the rest of the seat/orifice/spring.

Others much more experienced than I will no doubt be able to help you out.

This might help, its rebuild instructions for a r108 which is basically an r109 without the dial-a-breath feature.

Install the orifice first but only screw it in about 1 turn. Then install the lever, before you install the poppet. The hold the lever straight up or even a little forward, and slip the poppet into the barrel with the feet pointing towards the mouthpiece side of the reg. Use a soft dowel to gently push the poppet past the feet of the lever. As you push it past the lever, you sjhould feel it seat asthe poppet engages the lever and pulls the lever down towards a normal operating position. Add the spring, plastic pad, and adjuster with clip. With the cover off, hook it up to an air supply and it should freeflow like crazy. Hold the lever down and tighten the orifice about one full turn at a time until either the flow stops or you hear it decrease a lot. You want to get it leaking just a bit. Then go to adjusting a small fractio0n of a turn until it seals. Make sure you hold the lever down to pull the seat away from the orifice or the orifice will cut and destroy the seat. The penultimate adjustment should be a 1/12th turn that results in seating. Then another 1/12 turn should get you to about 1 to 1.2 inches of cracking pressure. Now ad the diaphragm and covers and it should leak again. One more round of small adjustments should bet it resealed with about a total of 1/2 turn on the adjustment. If it takes much more than 1/2 turn, there may be a compatibility problem with the lever and it is time to seek out a pro. If it does not leak when you install the cover, you need to check and see that the lever is not too loose. a slight depression of the purge (1/8th inch) should get if flowing. If not, that same pro is probably in order.

Good luck
