I am considering buying this scubapro MK25 S600. My dive instructor said it appeared to be aluminum in the middle which has been discontinued due to corrosion issues if not cared for carefully. It appears in great shape and I just used it in a boyounacy class. I am having it serviced since its been 10 years. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I use the mk25 s600 ultralight which is aluminum. Since it is used look at it carefully. Is there any signs of corrosion, Scratches on the oxide coating etc if not they are great regs. I just take great care to rinse everything very carefully with fresh water after use. Then I dry and store in cool, dry storage.

I only have 25 dives. The last 15 have been on the mk25 ultralight. It breathes better than anything I have used. I plan on taking care of it and it should last longer than I do. (I turn 73 in October) ;)

I have 2 S600's/MK25's for my tec diving setup for the last year (time to get them serviced). If you rinse them off after each day of diving as mentioed by htatton and get them servicing in the required timeframe to maintain the warranty, you will have many years of use. It being discontinued would be news to me.

excellent regs, 1 have 2 sets.

I would not buy them again for 1 reason: those damn non-standard nuts on the hose and 2nd stage. Wth were they thinking??? A special tool required to take the second stage off the hose?? Or use channel locks and a paper towel so you don't booger up the chrome?? Wth??

Or Is it just me or the age of my regs?

Do you mean a mk 20 ultralight with an aluminum 1st stage?

No it is a mk 25 ultralight 1st Stage. I was amazed too but both are stamped on the body. Mk25 and Ultralight are both on the 1st stage.

My guess to keep people from taking the regs apart who really should not be doing so. I am sure if you dig into it deep enough you will find a lawyer lurking around. :)

BTW - I have three MK25s and four S600s and plan on buying at least two more complete sets. I like the way they performs.

That irritates me as well. I just take a wrench, cover it with cloth, and let it go. Replacing regs to certain hoses is a not too uncommon practice. I always dislike nonstandardization.

more likely "you'll die if you don't bring it in - and pay us- to unscrew that nut". After all one can buy the "special" tool for a nominal fee - a mere $90 at my LDS (yes, I know scuba tools).

It's just irritating and pointless to have created a deviant part when a standard one would be just fine.

(What set me off on this rant was just this past weekend I wanted to break a set down and reassemble into a stage reg. Damn.)
