I've had a ScbuaPro EDI for a couple of years now. Apart from having to change the batteries, the thing seems to be working fine. I just got it back from ScubaPro, and they didn't seem to have any problem repairing it.

However, the dive shop I took it to cringed a bit when they saw it and was surprised that I still used it (it was apparently discontinued in 1996, even the store where I bought sold it to me in 1999! - that's what I get for not doing more careful research before going to the store). I haven't been able to find any information on the EDI on the scubapro site or the web in general.

Is anyone familiar with the EDI? If so, could you share your information with me? In general, how long can one continue to use a computer before it's time to replace it?

It was not discontinued in '96 as that is the year I bought mine, and a buddy got one one or two years later, then had it upgraded to a newer version.
Other than the original hose was useless, I have had no problem with mine, but there were lots of air reading failures with the early model. Not sure about later versions. I still have mine, and it still works, but I no longer use it.

I bought mine about the same time MD got his. Mine is still working OK but only used as a backup. I had 2 complaints about the EDI. First, it was too conservative for me. I now dive Oceanic computers which are fairly liberal allowing me to controll any added conservativeness I chose to inject. The second was that the contacts were so sensetive that it was almost impossible to get it out of the dive mode in a humid SW environment like Cozumel. Overall, I regretted the purchase and it convinced me that AI was not the route I wanted to go. However, from a reliability and performance (albeit conservative) standpoint, I see little reason to ever replace it for No Deco diving with air.

My TRAC failed underwarranty but after it had bene disocntinued and was consequently replaced by SP with an EDI which was not nearly as capable a computer.

The deco model used in the EDI is very conservative in the middle depth range around 60-80 ft and bottom times are substantially less than with other computers. This can be a problem if you are trying to stay with a buddy with a more normal conmputer in this depth range.

The 2 pin interface is a pain and altitude compensation is not automatic and has to be set manually which is tedious.

Mine served as a guest computer until it died last year for indeterminate reasons. There is not much you can do with one once they quit as they are no longer supported by SP which discontinued them when they started pushing Uwatec.
