Does anyone know a resource where I can see animated scuba signals? Also while googling this I saw one for "I have to vomit" 1) are they serious, there's a signal for this, 2) it also recommended vomiting through the second stage, is this a joke?

I don't know offhand of any resources for animated hand signals, but if you google "scuba hand signals" a number of good references come up. I think the ones at http://www.wrstc.com/downloads/CommonHandSignalsforScubaDiving.pdf are pretty well explained.

One thing you'll notice is that after the most basic signals, there may be variations in some ofthe signals. There is no universal scuba hand signal language, so it's important that before diving you and your buddy establish the important signals and keep them straight during the dive.

And yes, if vomiting, it's best to do it through the second stage to reduce the chances of inhaling seawater between retches. Afterwards you can take the reg out and swish it to rinse it out, or if this grosses you out, switch to your alternate second stage.

You'll learn about it in class but yes you can vomit through your second stage. On my first boat dive in my OW class I was so sea sick I came close. My instructor keep saying for me to just chuck while I was on the surface so I wouldn't be needing to do it u/w - I guess it was one of his rental regulators :rofl3: But yea you can vomit, cough, sneeze, etc through your second stage, don't worry about it :)

The RSTC PDF document is probably the best resource for the basic signals, but there are a few things that I can see which need to be pointed out:

*If you use the go up signal, most people will think that means surfacing i.e. ending/thumbing the dive. It usually doesn't mean ascend to a shallower depth - you need to square that away with your buddy prior to the dive
*The "something is wrong" signal can also be executed pointing to the area of the problem (ear, mask, regulator, belt etc)
*The "Danger" (crossed arms) signal is also used as the end-dive signal in some parts, so I don't think it's too reliable.

I saw a guy do that in Grand Bahama on a shallow dive in a tough surge, too funny! Glad he didn't do that at Shark Junction earlier. :D
