Hi,

Does anyone know where there might be a list in page form, or booklet, or poster, of the various hand signals used for scuba? I'm taking a trip with my family in March back to Bonaire (i've already been myself once), and the other 3 have varying degrees of scuba experience. I was thinking one thing that would make this trip safer and alot more comfortable, would be if we all could memorize a list of scuba signs to communicate with eachother underwater more than just the basic few. I have thought of a numberous ones that make sense to me, then thought maybe I'm recreating the wheel.

Thoughts?

Regards,
Bill

Look in your OW training manual.

I would pick up a couple of wrist slates, makes things a whole lot easier for people that don't dive together a lot and/or are new.

Hand signals that might need to know or should have some basis for communicating
1. Rise and level off at X depth
2. Shoot a lift bag
3. Which Way
4. Turn Around/Go back
5. What Compass Heading (more of just a clarification--how would they communicate something like 275 degrees)
6. How are you expressing air--by 5s, thousands method, hundreds, etc
7. A few wildlife hand signals like shark, lion fish
8. Signal for Boat
9. 3ft safety stop
10. Signal for show me again or do it again
11. You lead, I follow
12. Something is wrong

Google scuba hand signals you will get a lot of links with diagrams.

Keep the list short. Also if it anything besides level off for safety stop, thumb the dive, out of air, I am ok, do them slow and after the diver has the other divers attention. Sometimes divers flash me a sign/signs quickly and it has the effect of getting my attention but I miss some of the hand signal. Especially if they string three of them in a quick series.

If you give me your email, I could mail you some.
