Ok - a spin off topic from the Circumnavigate the world topic currently ongoing.

The circumnavigation of the world is rather a large undertaking to say the least, it was suggested that maybe a crossing of the English Channel could be undertaken underwater instead.

Now it transpires that thia is already being attempted as a fundraising activity http://www.orchid-cancer.org.uk

So it would be wrong to undermine or attempt to compete with this attempt.

Please post your thoughts on other (sensible) attempts that could be feasible and which could also raise money for good causes.

I suggest maybe that there should be several directions for this to go - attempts and ideas for American undertakings, and also one for European/UK undertakings.

My suggestion was maybe a circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight.

Or maybe there is something we could do as a sideline to the Orchid attempt that we can add to their total ?

How about something along the lines of doing the Atlantic! Set up two teams; European and American, each set off from the respective sides of the atlantic and meet in the middle. Each team raises money for their preferred charity.

This way it raises some money, sets up a nice little challenge for each team (to beat the other side) and just encourages good old fashioned sportsmanship!!

...or across something less expansive like the red sea!!!

Um... I might be a wimp, but I'm going to try to get something a little milder going in my neck of the woods. How about as a fundraiser for charity, inviting divers to dive the entire length of the Comal River in New Braunfels, Texas? It's only a few miles and is, at best, about 20 feet deep (the average is more like 6). Tubers make the trip every day (sometimes in crowds, but hey...that could make it more fun and attract more attention for the charity we're working for). Anyone up for an event like this one?

This sort of thread could really get out of hand with nearly everyone coming up with different ideas and absolutely no closer to 'signing' one off. I think that as this board is truly international then perhaps we could come up with a way of combining an event that spans the globe, meaning; Each country, or group of, has a team of divers and they all participate in a common goal at the same time doing the same thing (dont ask me what at this time!).

So rather than identifying a location we should perhaps focus on an event and work from that...

I think the idea of circumnavigating something has some appeal, I dont know about other dive sites across the globe - but many I should think involve islands of some description, and so that could be a common goal?

Various locales pick their preferred island, and we can have a Global circumnavigation that way?

Proceeds could go to local causes then - and it wouldnt be quite so costly as an inter ocean swim!

We cant do it until after May though or I'll have to watch from the boat......;)

Thats good news - now all we need is to see what interest or other suggestions come to light................

Apparently none !!
