Yep. They're pretty sedentary and well camouflaged. So they're hard to find, but interesting when you do. As for any risk, if you don't go bashing into the bottom, you should have no problem.

One you might be fortunate enough to see:

Saw this one in the Flower Garden Banks, (Stetson to be exact). I think Stetson
is about 70 miles off of Freeport, Texas.

We saw one very ugly fish under one of the ribs of the USS New Hampshire off Cape Ann (around 30 ft deep, water temp was ~57 F). I'm not sure what it was (a scorpion fish or a stone fish?) but it looked very old and was very slow and lazy. It was very well camouflaged and I couldn't have recognized it to be a fish at all if I hadn't stopped for a couple of minutes at the place where it was. It didn't seem bothered at all by our presence, but it swam away very slowly. (Body was somewhat elongated, grey, and covered in sand. It had small eyes and scorpion-fish-like fins. I couldn't see any teeth.) Any ideas?

I know if there are scorpionfish in the Atlantic near the coast of Southeastern U.S.

Would you like to know if there are any scorpionfish in the Atlantic near the coast of Southeastern U.S.?

The answer: Yes

The lionfish, which has infested the eastern seaboard up to the Carolinas is a scorpaenidae.

It seems the fish was most likely a spotted scorpionfish. It's probably not very common. It's good that we didn't sit on it or do something stupid. It looked like it could take a lot of abuse -- we prodded it a little on the side of its tail and it barely moved, so my first thought was that it was probably dead or asleep.

Here's one!

Beautiful shot. Some dives I spend the whole time looking for them. I haven't found...or I guess a better word is seen... many here in Belize.
