Anyone ever use an SB800 in a (separate) housing? Since I've got one and will be carrying it on vacation anyway, would it be as good as say a Sealife SL960?

Zephrant,
We use them all the time. They work great and give true iTTL for the Nikon System.
You can also use it with other systems but in Manual mode.
You can find a product review here http://www.fantasea.com/email/fsb800_press_release_done.asp

Most all of our Dealers offer this product, you can see the list of Fantasea Resellers at the bottom of the page of www.fantasea.com

good luck

Hy, Zephrant!
The basical difference between a "land" flash and an underwater strobe is that the light cone of a land flash tends to be wider at the horizontal axis than on the vertical. An underwater strobe offers normally a "perfect" circular cone. (the difference is clear, you only have to look at underwater strobes and see how they are built, circular, and compare them to land flashes). And that means that if you shoot wide angle underwater and use a "housed" land flash, in certain cases you'll have less light on the upper and lower part of your picture then on the left or right side.
In the case of the SeaLife flash unit you're talking about, I have the impression (but never used one) that it works like a "housed" unit. If you compare, for example with Inon flashes, or Ikelite's, or Seacam's, or Sea&Sea's, there you have circular flash tubes (Inon sets two normal ones in a T position and achieves the same effect, Sea&Sea three of them forming a triangle), which achieve a more equal lightning.
So, which is the final conclusion? I'm using on land a SB800, but underwater an Ikelite DS-125 strobe.
The other reason for an underwater strobe is that I'm much less worried about flooding. With a "housed" one, you have a supplementary set of O-Ring's to inspect, lube, care...
Of course it's also a subject of budget. When I started to look around which flash/strobe I could buy, I also thought (after receiving the explanation I'm giving you now), "..and now I'll have to buy another extra strobe, now that I have the SB-800?".

Good luck!

Hi Howard,

I'd honestly be MUCH more interested in the housing IF I could use it in TTL mode with other housings. Maybe I can, but the description sounds like no.

Ron hi,
The FSB 800 with its 5 pin Nikonos Style Sync Cord should work with any Housing with a similar 5 pin Nikonos style Sync Port.
I have heard that it works with the Nexus and Subal Housings.

If you have a specific need, please contact us direct at info@fantasea.com

Best regards
Howard

Personally I use, and like the same approach Jordi "Hidroj" uses:
If you go UW, go with a good UW Strobe. Could not put it better than him.
But if you REALLY want to use your flash uw, I would try better strobe housings.
I saw a nice little Subal housing for a Nikon flash... looks sturdier for such a magnificent flash as the SB800.
If you can get one it is WAY much better than the plastic one!!!

Trying to study the topic a while ago, thanks for those who sent me the pointers, and of course there are various ways to make it happen.
