I'm interested in ideas that scuba divers may have or use to save air consumtion during the dive.... any personal experience or tips or advice?

Dive more and get in better shape

Neutral buyancy + Horizontal trim + proper weighting (to have less air in wing or BC) stremlined BC (I love my Backplate and harness, no I'm not trolling) and efficient finning techniques. Other than that, be in great shape, run several times a week...

Well the dive more and get better shape... I'm trying to compete next year in the Free Diving Championship... so I'm searching for advice of special breathing tecniques, menthal strategies, yoga... etc....

may be any tec diver has some advice out there...?

Yep, dive more = more relaxed, less anxious
better shape = less exertion, less O2

Also:
Streamlining gear is key, less resistence
Better trim, no head up attitude, less resistence
Arms in, no flailing about, less resistence
Perfect weighting=better trim=less resistence, no air in BC causing drag etc.
Better breathing technique, deep exhale, deep inhale, hold for a bit (provides
better gas exchange flushing CO2 and allowing more O2 to absorb)
Good finning technique

I'm sure there may be a few other things you can do

It's really a different world SCUBA vs. Freediving, as far as breathing is concerned. SCUBA divers practice breathing and moving efficiently, while freedivers are concered with breath holding and moving efficiently. In essence, most SCUBA divers get better by diving, being in shape and being relaxed. I don't think there are many that do yoga before diving in order to enhance efficient breathing...like a lot of freedivers do.

You are on the right track when you mention mental strategies and yoga. Any type of cardiovascular excercise will help, and of course, practice breath-holding above and below the surface. Study the mammalian dive reflex in order to gain insight on how to get your body into freediving shape. Take care of your spleen :)

Do a google search on "reducing air consumption" AND "scuba".

I found a technique somewhere that goes basically like this.

1>Breathe in for a count of 5.
2>Don't breathe for a count of 5 (DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH. This is called skip breathing and can lead to a whole host of problems)
3>Breathe out for a count of 5
4>repeat step 2
5>repeat.

This seems like a variation of the meditative 4 fold breath technique. It will help ensure an efficent transfer of oxygen in the lungs. But again, do not hold your breath.

But take it with a grain of salt. My last dive was at 25 feet and somehow i blew through an AL80 in 32 minutes...

I decreased my air consumption dramatically after getting an easy breathing reg and quality fins. I didn't realize how much work breathing from a less than optimum regulator was!

RiverRat is right on target too with streamlining, horizontal trim, and overall less resistance. Try carrying a bag with 15 - 20 lbs. of bugs and you'll learn real quick about resistance, it's like carrying a sail through the water with you.

Experience (to minimize anxiety and exertion) and getting in shape will do more for your air consumption rate than anything else. Streamlining and weighting is a good thing of course but does little in terms of measureable air consumption.
